Statement:
We wish Detroiters the best of luck for the successful validation of their petitions to reorganize the Detroit City Council. They desire to have an election changing from nine at-large members to 7 districts and 2 at-large.
Their website contains reasons the switch will benefit the residents of Detroit, all very similar to the benefits Toledo will reap if voters vote Yes on ISSUE 2 to reorganize our council. Link.

Group to submit petitions to elect Detroit council members by district
David Josar / The Detroit News
Detroit — A group of city residents this morning said they have enough signatures to get on the November ballot a measure that would require City Council members be elected by district but still maintain two at-large representatives.
The “Detroiters for City Council by Districts Coalition” will deliver the petitions containing more than 37,000 signatures from city residents to the city Department of Elections today at 2:30 p.m., according to an announcement this morning.
The threshold for signatures was 29,000. Election officials will then begin the process of certifying that the signatures are valid.
The proposal, if passed by voters, would create districts for seven council members. Currently the nine council members can reside anywhere in the city.
