Wednesday, July 22, 2009
9:00 am—12:00 pm
Ward Pavillion @ Wildwood Metropark
4830 W. Central Ave., Toledo, Ohio
Over the past forty years, environmental organizations have advanced a simple message to address complex global threats: Act locally. While the slogan imparts the conventional wisdom that global change begins with a series of local acts, it also highlights an often forgotten truth. Many environmental concerns are, in fact, local threats with local solutions.
Stormwater pollution is a prime example of a local environmental issue. At the most basic level, stormwater pollution begins with a local decision to alter the landscape and disrupt the natural water cycle. By turning a natural area into a parking lot or rooftop, communities alter the area’s hydrology and block natural infiltration. Over time, these local decisions reach a tipping point where stormwater shifts from being a resource to an environmental threat.
This local stormwater policy workshop is designed for government officials, watershed coordinators, environmental advocates, stormwater managers, planners, and the public. Topics will include: understanding the local political landscape; choosing a local regulation or policy; key components of ordinances; and mobilizing community support.
Admission is FREE. Seating is limited, pre-registration is required. Please contact Katie Swartz at kswartz@americanrivers.org or 419-936-3759 with your name and affiliation.
