Excerpts from Tom Waniewski’s January Newsletter

18 Jan 2009

District 5 Toledo City Councilman Tom Waniewski has sent out his January Newsletter, below are a few of the items shared that I thought might be of interest. If you want to subscribe, you can do so by clicking here.

Calling Old Orchard Residents

I have met with the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo to plan for a piece of art in Old Orchard. My goal is to use money already appropriated plus matching dollars for a nice, but simple piece or series of pieces in the district.

I am looking for Old Orchard residents who are interested in determining the look of the art piece and its placement. Please contact JoAnne in my office at 245-1050 if you are interested in working with me and the arts community.

Snow Plowing

I have received many emails regarding the snow plowing. Most, I am happy to say, have been complimentary of the work done. This has been a challenging winter to say the least.

The city uses, on average, 33,000 tons of salt a year. They had 47,000 tons on hand at the start of the season due to good planning by the department. Dave Welch and his crew are to be commended.

There are still some areas of District 5 where the leaf pick-up has not been completed, and that has made for a snowy, messy, mix.

Garbage Changes

By now you’ve experienced the “rotating” refuse pick up. It will take some getting used to. The reason for the new scheduling is to eliminate Saturday pick ups after holidays. The city is trying to save overtime costs by eliminating the Saturday pick ups. I will be sending out an easy-to-follow refuse calendar very soon, so please watch your mail box for the calendar. My goal is to send a calendar to every home in my district. Thanks to the generosity of Marco’s, Columbia Gas, The University of Toledo, and ProMedica for making it possible for me to produce and mail these calendars.

Important News for Columbia Gas Customers

Natural gas customers in the Douglas and Ledyard area will benefit from Columbia Gas of Ohio’s $2 billion pipeline improvement
program.

Approximately 800 customers living on 21 streets bounded by Central Avenue, Aldringham Road, Monroe Street, Bellevue Road, Groveland Road and Drummond Road will be impacted starting next month.

The work will require a temporary interruption of natural gas service. Customers will be contacted via letter in advance of the scheduled
work. Columbia Gas will make personal contact with customers prior to shutting off service and to schedule re-light appointments.

If the money is appropriated in a city account then let’s unappropriate it and help balance the budget.

Thanks for posting this. I didn’t know that my councilman published a newsletter. Subscribed!

Lindsay Webb publishes one as does Michael Collins. All are interesting and surprisingly free of vacuous political rhetoric.

Notice that these are all “new” councilmen — not recycled names from recycled political families. One is a Democrat, one is a Republican, and one is an independent although I’d love to have Michael Collins in the Republican party.

Gives me hope that there is fresh blood out there willing to be more responsive and more communicative with their constituencies.

    Steven Flagg Says:

Knowing Collins makeup I sincerely doubt he joins any political party. I think he is properly positioned to serve no master except his own conscience.

I’ve generally been impressed with the newcomers.

Webb got off to a rough start but seems to be learning from the mistakes and getting better at her job. She may be a keeper if she can stay out of the partisan politics and stick with the business of the people.

Waniewski is my council person. He has met many times in the community, is pretty responsive and is seeking solutions. At this point, he gets good marks.
