What organized dissent in a party looks like…
There was a lot of talk and blog comments about Jon Stainbrook when he took over as chairman of the Lucas County Republican Democratic Party, but realistically very few did more than just talk about it. Which is kind of the status quo for our county, people complain, they get all irate about a person for a short time period and then? Nothing happens. Over in Summit County, some of the membership in their county party were not happy with leadership, even though the vote won’t happen again until 2010? They are taking action.
I don’t know enough about what happened there to make an informed opinion, though I have followed Ben Keeler’s past and current coverage of what’s going on. What I think is additionally noteworthy is the Bill of Rights they’ve created. Both of our local parties could benefit from becoming more transparent and perhaps developing their own “code of ethics” in a similar format. This also demonstrates that when you really do want something to change, some people realize that it’s worth it to make long term goals.
psssssssst…Republican!
Jon’s a republican…shhhhh
January 4th, 2009 at 9:01 pmlol – thanks Brian – Emily just teased me about it too.

January 4th, 2009 at 9:12 pmwell done, Emily!
ya’d think she’d have a proofreader on staff, right?

January 4th, 2009 at 9:14 pmYeah, I should or I should stick to my golden rule of proofing twice before I hit post.

January 4th, 2009 at 9:16 pmIs there a chance that the “newsummitrepublicans” learned by Stainbrook’s example.
Insurrection ain’t easy. And, it takes more than a website.
Maybe the new-summit-guys should contact Stainbrook for some tips about dislodging an entrenched, ineffective leadership team.
Carry on…
January 4th, 2009 at 9:57 pmYes, it takes more than a website, but it’s a start and they raise some valid points that could be used as a discussion point for both parties when it comes to transparency.
I don’t think they learned by Stainbrook’s example, this was going on at the same time as the shift in power happened here.
January 4th, 2009 at 9:59 pmGeez Lisa Renee must you tempt us to out the chairman again? Let me guess why you had your little snafu with his party affiliation. Could it have something to do with the FACTS that the stain has at times been involved with Democratic party/candidates? Here are a few excerpts from the Toledo Blade that i received in an email some months ago;
Mr. Stainbrook , who has written free-lance entertainment stories for The Blade, worked on campaigns for Bob Dole, Bob Taft, Mike DeWine, George Voinovich, and Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry. He ran three times for Toledo City Council, all unsuccessfully. In 1998, while working as a deputy auditor, he challenged Mr. Kaczala in a Republican primary and lost.
Blade, The (Toledo, OH) – February 28, 2006
The man known to acquaintances as “The Stain” has all but decided to turn his back on the GOP in favor of the local Democratic Party, but the future in such a move is likely very limited. No one trusts a political turncoat, and the few entreaties he has made to local Democratic office-holders have gone unanswered.
Blade, The (Toledo, OH) – July 7, 2000
Lucas County Auditor Larry Kaczala survived a challenge from a former confidant and easily won the Republican nomination for re-election in primary balloting yesterday, according to unofficial returns from the county board of elections.
Mr. Stainbrook said he spoke to Mr. Witzler last night and offered his support to the Democrat through the November election. Blade, The (Toledo, OH) – May 6, 1998
Too bad more people did not heed these warnings.
January 5th, 2009 at 11:23 amrogue – lets talk about ineffective leadership which would include your current leader, Mr. Stainbrook. He had stated sometime back in the blade that the percentage of votes he was asked to achieve for McCain was 38%. In a post election article in the blade they tried valiantly to cover Mr. Stainbrook’s shortcomings by using the number of voters as opposed to percentages.
The following is a quote from Jon Stainbrook in the blade “In an election having such a Democratic tilt, the Lucas County Republican Party held its own compared to 2000. We did better than Bush did in 2000,” Mr. Stainbrook said.
No, you did not do better than Bush did in 2000 you idiot. In 2000 Bush took 39.1% in Lucas County, in 2008 McCain took 33.43% in the same county. Yet statewide McCain took 46.94% compared to Bush’s 50.0%. That is a net loss in Lucas County of 5.67% but in the state the loss was significantly less.
I look forward to yours and Brian Schwartz defense of Stainbrook.
January 5th, 2009 at 12:54 pmI think some of the activities and information being put out by the Toledo Young Republicans, led by Jeff Simpson, are steps in the right direction.
We will see what other Lucas County republicans add to the mix, and whether some established republicans lend their influence and $$ to an effort to bring leadership, organization, and legitimacy to the Lucas County Republican Party. The Take Back Toledo effort, and the candidate they choose to back, may also provide a future.

January 5th, 2009 at 1:55 pmAlexArshinkoffSucks.com is available. I don’t know why they did not just use that domain.
Also, I know for a fact that Jon is envious of the rule changes Alex made which assures him of being the chair.
Talk about ineffective leadership, let’s look at Jon in the last 6 months:
-Forgets to file paperwork to get Jan Scotland on the ballot, blames everyone and their uncles. His own mistake cost citizens the right to a second choice. Of course that is a “rookie mistake” although I can’t remember any other rookies making this mistake in the past.
-Testifies on behalf of Robert Croak on having the civic center theater in the Erie Street Market at council – it is very un-Republican to justify government going into competition with private sector.
-Forgets to file the campaign paperwork on time. Unbelievably says that they thought they did not have to because they did not spend over $1,000. Lord knows how they can operate several months and not spend over $1,000. Noe’s got 150k in donations in 04. If Jon got 10% of that, that is 15K. Obviously questions there, and if the donations can be traced some of the leadership may be back in front of a judge again for stealing. This must also be a “rookie mistake”
-Endorses levies without any thought on if they match Republican principals or not. Does not even know what he voted for (almost like it was some drunken bash) and also says that he sat down with Carty to get feedback on COSI. Other Republican clubs end up saying no to the COSI levy.
-Has no central committee meetings to organize the precincts to GOTV. Then has one a couple of weeks ago which lasted just minutes.
-No communication of what is going on to central committee members.
-Threatens everyone and their uncle that he will personally sic the Blade on them or destroy them if they do not do what he says.
-Has people working at HQ in the past election who proudly say they will vote for Obama, but helping out Jon because he is their friend.
-Not to mention the % Q’s that Talbot brings up above.
This is only 6 months and that is a record of mistakes that normally would take a year or more to accumulate. The fact is that in these 6 months Jon has made the Party look worse than it has ever been and has proven more ineffective than ever. I can’t wait to see what the next 6 months will bring. You can keep informed by watching the unorganized dissent Web sites (wink wink) or by joining and helping out a club that espouses true Republican principals and who are not afraid to take on poor governmental decisions in the area.
January 5th, 2009 at 7:15 pmI saw The Chairman in action when Mit Romney was in town, he was all about his picture being taken with Mit. He might have spent more time in making sure Mit had a podium or small stage to stand on, instead of a metal folding chair. Nice show of class Stain!!!
January 5th, 2009 at 7:43 pmLeadership at it’s finest. The party needs a leader, not this guy.
Shuuuuue! Can you smell the swamp gas, in here? This from a guy who believes shoveling snow is newsworthy.
Chrissy, you have no idea what leadership is about. If anyone were to truly waste the time to chronicle your failures, it would surely take more than ten paragraphs.
So, while we will always be entertained with your diatribes, we will also always be cognizant that you really are “the little Engine that couldn’t”.
Carry on..
January 5th, 2009 at 9:13 pmI guess we can take that as the usual response from rogue, slam somebody and never answer the questions about his p.o.s. leader.
January 5th, 2009 at 9:45 pmRogue, you do want to remember the rules when it comes to trying to avoid personal insults. His name is Chris, and he did not insult Jon, he pointed out what he felt was valid points.
The snow shoveling thing was a novel idea, it got the group some pr.
January 5th, 2009 at 9:50 pmWell when you can’t defend, you result to personal attacks
. In this area, that happens way too much.
Regardless, I think that the Summit County Rs trying to take back their party from someone who has been there way too long and purposely set the rules to make sure one person is chair for a long time-that is a good thing.
January 5th, 2009 at 10:21 pmYep, like jonstainbrooksucks.com is something to be proud of.
Sheesh.
January 5th, 2009 at 10:43 pmThat’s a valid issue to raise Rogue.
Chris what I liked about what they are trying to do is to increase the participation and outline exactly what expectations members of a party and candidates could have. That’s something I think both of our local parties could be a bit more transparent on.
January 5th, 2009 at 10:46 pmActually, the reason I did that was because people are afraid of standing up to Jon. That is my Statue of Liberty in Tiananmen square. So yes I am proud of it and I am showing that people can stand up to people like Carty, Jon or others and not be worried. People like Jon use threats to try to get respect and that is the type of personality which should not be in power in the area. I am tired of running into them on the school board, in city government and in our party. Not my favorite choice of words, but they were carefully chosen given Jon’s history. Carty also gets his own site and I am proud of that one too. Free speech is a wonderful thing.
The Summit Rs are using free speech to show what they want to do to make the party better. It is a great example.
January 5th, 2009 at 11:22 pmInteresting post. I’m curious as why you decided to tie it to Jon Stainbrook in someway. It seems to be a fairly illogical step in reasoning. So let get this straight…the republicans have issues in Summit County, the republicans have issues in Lucas County, but somehow Jon Stainbrook is involved or related to Summit County politics? I’m lost. And you felt it prudent to call Stainbrook a democrat only to cross it out and call him a republican? Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. The fact that anyone can find credence in this article is outrageous, and this is proven by the comments. You simply used this as an excuse to illicit larger rating for your Ohio Blog Rating. You know the people love to slam the Stain. Outrageous and pathetic.

January 6th, 2009 at 1:48 amrouge will never answer a direct question posed and will always choose the tap dance and smoke screen.
They were trained by the best Republican wannabe’s in the area!
January 6th, 2009 at 5:05 amWhichever one of you is the fictional character of the moment making up “ProgressiveToledo” I’d recommend re-reading the first line of the post….
Here we had talk, there we had another group that was also unhappy with their leadership – they did something…
January 6th, 2009 at 7:55 amProgressivetoledo – if you read post #7 you will understand why Lisa made the mistake of calling the stain a Dem. Well, maybe it wasn’t a mistake to call him a Dem but to call him the chairman of the Dem party was a mistake!
January 6th, 2009 at 9:39 amI’m not familiar with the insurgency in Summit County, but I know in the 1990s, Alex Arshinkoff was the model that the state party wanted other urban GOP chairmen to use in running their parties.
Alex successfully elected Republicans in a county dominated by Democrats. I don’t know what Alex did to fall so far out of favor with so many Republicans, but once upon a time, Alex was a power broker on the state level.
Mr. Talbot, please don’t lump me in with rogue. I don’t attack people, insult people, or call them names. I’ve never been ordered to participate in a felony diversion program nor has the woman in my life made veiled threats at people who disagreed with me. Rogue and I may support the same chairman, but I know who he is and make it a point not to associate myself with him or be associated with him.

the stain definitely acts like a dem and hangs out with folks that are dem like, you know, tatoos and piercings? I can understand how Lisa could call him a dem. Freudian slip, I suppose.

January 7th, 2009 at 8:40 amBrian – I will refrain from lumping you with Rogue. Please accept my sincere apology.
January 7th, 2009 at 10:17 amUpgrayded,
I’m afraid I’ll have to stick by my statement. Bill Brennan is a first class individual who knows the area economy as well as anyone and will be an asset to Keith Wilkowski.
I didn’t realize that calling someone a “first-class individual” was name calling, but I guess under a strict definition it is. Color me guilty.
No need to apologize, Mr. Talbot. It’s all in the spirit of good public debate for most of us.
