Black Swamp Conservancy Hosts Regional Conservation Meeting

Perrysburg, Ohio – Black Swamp Conservancy, a Perrysburg, Ohio-based land conservation organization, recently hosted its annual northwest Ohio conservation planning meeting. The meeting was held at the W.W. Knight Preserve in Perrysburg.

The conservancy established the regional planning process in 2007 with a grant from the Land Trust Alliance. The purpose of the planning process is for Black Swamp Conservancy and its conservation partners to implement a strategic natural area conservation plan for northwest Ohio.

“A recent study by the Knight Foundation and Gallup Consulting shows that the physical beauty of a community and the availability of parks and green spaces for residents is a key factor in keeping citizens connected with their communities,” said Kevin Joyce, Black Swamp Conservancy’s executive director. “The conservation plan we have developed is a tremendous resource for the conservation organizations in our region that benefits all of its citizens.”

At the meeting, more than thirty participants spent a half-day updating each other about developments at their agencies during the past year. The rest of the day was spent in breakout sessions, updating the planning document, which identifies the most important natural areas needing protection in northwest Ohio.

The organizations that participate in the conservation planning process include Black Swamp Conservancy and its Lake Erie Islands Chapter, as well as Black Swamp Bird Observatory, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Ducks Unlimited, Hancock Park District, Henry Soil and Water Conservation District, Maumee Valley Heritage Corridor, The Natural Resource, The Nature Conservancy, Oak Openings Region Conservancy, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Ohio Prairie Association, Ohio Wetlands Foundation, Partners for Clean Streams, Sandusky County Park District, Toledo Area Metroparks, Trust for Public Land, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and Wood County Park District.

Members of the committee that planned the meeting were Kevin Joyce and Rob Krain of Black Swamp Conservancy, Neil Munger of the Wood County Park District, Nancy Strayer from ODNR, Tim Schetter of Toledo Metroparks, Tim Brugeman of the Hancock Park District and the Sandusky County Park District’s Steve Gruner. Mr. Munger and Mr. Bruner are also members of Black Swamp Conservancy’s board of trustees.

Black Swamp Conservancy is a non-profit corporation whose mission is to protect farmland and natural areas in northwest Ohio for the benefit of current and future generations. The organization has permanently protected over 7,100 acres of farmland, woods, shoreline, meadows and wetlands in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.
