Dunn states opponent is using “Smear Tactics”
This in via email from the Darlene Dunn for 46th State House District campaign:
DUNN DEMANDS REPUBLICAN OPPONENT STOP SMEAR TACTICS AND FOCUS ON THE ISSUES IMPORTANT TO MIDDLE CLASS
Recent Attack Ads Include Misleading Statements To Distract from Sear’s Failed Record
Sylvania, OH – Candidate for Ohio’s 46th House District, Darlene Dunn demands that her opponent and the Ohio Republican Party immediately cease misleading statements and focus on the issues important to Ohio’s struggling middle class. Dunn has run a positive, grassroots campaign focused on the concerns of the 46th house district residents since she declared her candidacy in January.
“There are serious challenges facing the middle class of Northwest Ohio, and the voters deserve to see vigorous debate on their most important concerns, not lies and misleading cheap shots from Republicans trying to hide the fact that they have nothing to offer to voters,” said Dunn.
Dunn was surprised and disappointed to see attack ads and mail from her opponent, but even more shocked at the content. These are the facts:
1) TV ad
· False Claim: “So irresponsible, Dunn forgot to renew her law license”
· Fact: In thirty-one years of practice, Dunn has never had a grievance filed against her. Dunn left her private practice as she was helping her mother and family to cope with the deaths of her father, father in-law, and brother. Fees were paid and she was reinstated when Dunn was ready to resume her practice of law after caring for her family.
2) Mail
· False Claim: “Wrong Values of advocating on behalf of a deadbeat dad”*
· Fact: Attorney Dunn’s role as a court-appointed attorney is to see that her client’s right to representation in our American legal system is preserved. Dunn spent seven years in the Lucas County Prosecutor’s office putting criminals in jail and prosecuting deadbeat parents who refused to pay their child support obligations.
*The Toledo Bar Association has recommended that this ad be investigated by the Ohio Bar Association.
“My opponent is unable to run a campaign on the issues because she is trying to hide the fact that she is a do-nothing legislator who is just collecting a paycheck,” said Dunn “She has failed to pass a bill or to even sponsor any legislation to address the concerns of Ohio’s struggling middle class—shame on her.”
Dunn has knocked on thousands of doors across the district, talking with middle class Ohioans about the economy, health care, job stability, and job creation. Voters have told Dunn they want a representative who will attack these problems and not attack people.
Darlene Dunn is a candidate for the 46th State House District, which includes the cities of Sylvania and Maumee, the village of Ottawa Hills, the townships of Harding, Monclova, Providence, Richfield, Spencer, Springfield, Sylvania, Swanton, Waterville, and the villages of Whitehouse and Waterville.
Go get’em Darlene! It is unfortunate that a candidate for public office has to resort to these types of tactics when there are so many other issues affecting ordinary Ohioans. Voters in HD 46 should not reward another candidate who allows the Ohio House Republican Caucus to run such a negative campaign.

October 7th, 2008 at 11:59 amBarb Sears on the show Wednesday morning.
October 7th, 2008 at 4:13 pmFred, if Barb will be on your show then when will Darlene appear?
October 7th, 2008 at 4:47 pmAnd don’t forget people – Barbara Sears was never elected to the Ohio House of Representatives seat that she currently occupies. She was appointed to an unexpired term of a vacant seat by the Republican political machine in January of this year.
Now, don’t gang up on me. I’m just trying to point out an inconvenient truth.
October 7th, 2008 at 6:52 pmI have received three hit pieces targeting Barbara Sears on Darlene Dunn’s behalf.
I have received another one that tries to make the argument that Darlene Dunn will solve our country’s energy crisis as a state rep from Ohio.

No need to attack a self-deprecation.
October 7th, 2008 at 7:15 pmMs. Sears will be on when she is available to do so. Any candidate is welcome on the show as they always have been Rocket. Ms. Sears can contact me at fred@wspd.com or my producer at meg@wspd.com anytime she wishes. I have met her only once and told her then my show would be open to her. Hopefully that answers your question.
October 7th, 2008 at 8:15 pmI HAVE BEEN IN POLITICS FOR OVRR 40 YRAES AND HAVE NEVER SEEN AN ATTACK LIKE THAT FROM A PERSON LIKE SEARS. SHE IS A DISCUSTING PERSON,AND VERY MEAN SHE MUST BE DEFEATED BIG TIME
October 7th, 2008 at 11:36 pmI HAVE ALREADY MAILED MY BALLOT IN AN I AM PROUD TO SAY IT WAS FOR JACKIE BROWN DARLENE DUNN AND OBAMA…THANK YOU VERY MUCH….TO BE FRANK IT WAS A STRAIGHT DEMOCRATIC TICKET AN A NO VOTE FOR ZEMUDA

October 7th, 2008 at 11:56 pmWhile I may not have the respect of this blogowner, and while I don’t see how anyone has any respect for her, let me speak frankly about this issue. The bottom line is that Darlene Dunn intended to run a clean campaign, but Barb Sears has taken a truth and made it into a lie. This is the most deceitful behavior. Barb Sears merely found something on the internet, and she exploited it, without knowing, investigating, or understanding the truth. This type of behavior should be unacceptable, but there are blogowners who will print mistruths, lies, and outright ridiculous rumors. But of course, these blogowners aren’t up for election.

“Friedman – I hope that while in politics for over 40 years that nobody ever asked you to proofread news releases.”
No one usually reads what freidman has to say. He is just a bag of air. No substance. He is very mean though, and likes to yell and scream a lot.
October 8th, 2008 at 5:45 amNot Again asserts No one usually reads what freidman has to say.
I’m wondering how Not Again has reached that conclusion. Did “Not Again” conduct a poll? Where is the data to substantiate the allegation?
Incidentally, Mike Friedman uses his real name. Mike Friedman has been active in politics and the community for 40 years. Mike Friedman lets readers know who he is and therefore is “an open book” which may be judged based on knowing who he is and where he is coming from. Whether one agrees with him or not, at least Mike Friedman has the courage to speak his convictions without hiding behind the cloak of anonymity as many of the gutless trolls and flamers that comment on blogs and elsewhere on the internet.
October 8th, 2008 at 7:35 amIt is hard to imagine that an upstanding Republican would use sleaze tactics during a campaign. Gosh, who coulda guessed that?
October 8th, 2008 at 9:15 amApparently, Terry correctly guessed it.
October 8th, 2008 at 9:21 amLong time readers to the blog will remember another candidate who faced some misleading material that was sent out during a campaign for this very same district. Especially you “progressive toledo”. Though I’m wondering Kurt, if it’s ever dawned on you that you seem to have a problem merely commenting on the blog without making some type of a slam at me.
If you were really that concerned about wanting my respect, you might want to consider some of your own behavior. For some strange reason I find it a bit difficult to respect someone who not only appears to have an obsessive interest in me personally, no matter the topic, but also regularly insults me. Call me silly, but respect to me is a two way street.
Ryan, Michael Friedman has always been very blunt with his opinions as Roland pointed out. He and Not Again have also had a series of blog exchanges that the two enjoy the banter though at times both have gone a bit farther than I’d like. Currently Michael’s typing abilities are hampered a bit because of a stroke he’s recovering from.
He’s not let that stop him from engaging in comments on the blog or responding to those he disagrees with, with the same zeal as before, but it has understandably impacted the quality of his typeography.

“Currently Michael’s typing abilities are hampered a bit because of a stroke he’s recovering from.”
Those two, McCain and freidman, have that in common. McCain has little typing ability due to war wounds and being held as a prisioner of war.
That is why I don’t critize freidman’s typing abilities, just the ideas that he taps out on occasion. But libs are quick to pounce on McCain for not being able to email.
October 8th, 2008 at 9:51 amYes, which is off topic, but let’s address that real quick then head back to the original topic. Many of us, including initially Joe Biden disagreed with the ad that stated McCain was out of touch for not being able to use a computer/email when the reality is it has nothing to do with his desire to, it has to do with his physical limitations. He’s unlike some of those still out there who have not embraced technology, like our Mayor as an example. McCain reads blogs…
October 8th, 2008 at 10:08 amI don’t want to continue the off-topic, but what you just said about McCain and physical limitations regarding a computer is news to me. And difficult to understand, given the technology that exists for users with disabilities. My niece is blind and still emails. My colleague at work has no use of one side of her body due to MS and all of her job functions are performed on a computer without modifications. If someone is truly interested in embracing technology, there are numerous ways to do so.
October 8th, 2008 at 12:34 pmI remember the prior incident Lisa. Smarmy. Actually I recall a couple of very disgusting campaigns here in the Toledo area. We need to reward more honorable people by voting them into office. When we stop rewarding the mud slingers with victory will be the day that the mud slinging stops.
With regard to McCain’s physical limitations – I was horrified when I read what happened to him. That he survived his initial wounds is miraculous. But what kind of mind does it take to develop those methods of torture.
It seems to me that I read about software that you could speak rather than type on the keyboard.
I’m amazed the man can use his arms at all. Sheer determination is the only thing I can figure.
October 8th, 2008 at 1:23 pmI have a vague recollection of such a campaign from years past….
October 8th, 2008 at 2:11 pmBarb Sears answers the question about the misleading ad on my show this morning and it is podcast on wspd.com I must say I was suprised by the answer and a follow up call from Doug Haynam backing her up. I would hope at some point a candidate for any office will take a principled stand against this type of ad. I don’t vote in District 46 so I have no dog in this hunt. Ms. Dunn has been invited on and we await her response.
October 8th, 2008 at 2:45 pmThanks Fred, the link to Fred’s podcast page is here, I recommend residents of District 46 listen.
October 8th, 2008 at 2:53 pmI, too, have a vague recollection of the previous District 46 campaign. ; ) I look forward to the day when those who run for public office can do so based on a positive platform of ideas without distorting their opponent’s positions/record. I also admit I won’t be holding my breath waiting for that to happen.
October 8th, 2008 at 3:34 pmRoland,
There is a Republican political “machine”? A machine requires working parts.
Methinks you’re just throwing around incendiary buzzwords.
Friedman,
I don’t think any thinking person could vote a straight ticket.

October 8th, 2008 at 5:26 pmThank you Lisa for the link to the podcast. I am disappointed in Rep. Sears that she was unwilling or unable to take the position of a LEADER and to request that the Ohio Republican House Caucus stop the ads on her behalf. If she is not strong enough to stand up to the party bosses in Columbus as to how her own campaign is to be run, it is my belief that she is not strong enough to fight for the interests of the residents of Western Lucas County.
October 8th, 2008 at 5:28 pmThe voters should not reward her with a full term for such cowardice.

Who cares roland, in my opinion friedman is an irrelevant old man. And, in my opinion, no reasonable person should care about his rants. Or even read them, unless they want to chuckle!
Your silly rants about using one’s real name is also a joke. You are also an old man, with nowhere to go, except retirement and a pension though your years of mediocre public service. And no one can take that away from you.
I realize you want more, to be a big player, and as you have said; you have begged the king pins in toledo to let you help run this place, into the ground. And there has been no answer. So you continue to stand on your mount and rant about nothingness.
October 8th, 2008 at 8:15 pmTHANKS ROLAND…FOR YOU SUPPORT. YOU WERE ALWAYS AN OUTSTANDING SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER.
THE REASON I USE CAPS IS DUE TO MY STROKE I HAVE NO USE OF MY LEFT HAND… I AM NOT YELLING AT ANYONE. NOT EVEN NOT AGAIN. MY LITTLE NEOCON BUDDY.CANT WAIT TILL NOV 4 ABOUT 1130 PM AND I CAN STICK A FORK INTO YOU AND CALL YOU DONE LIKE DINNER. WE WILL PICK UP 9 SENATE SEATS AN MY PREDICTION IS 45 HOUSE SEATS 2 HERE IN OHIO BUCHERRE IN EASTERN OHIO AND KILLROY IN OHIO 15 COLUMBUS, PLUS 3 SEATS IN THE OHIO HOUSE, INCLUDING THAT SLOB PIECE OF CRAP BARB SEARS.
October 8th, 2008 at 9:23 pmI KNOW DARLENE DUNN AND HER HUSBAND ON A PERSONAL BASIS AN THEY ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH, AND DARLENE IS A BORN LEADER AND WAS NOT SELECTED FOR OFFICE LIKE BUSH & SEARS.
SEARS IS LOW CLASS TRASH. SHE WAS A BAD COUNCILPERSON IN SYLVANIA AND WENT INTO OFFICE ON HER FATHER’S NAME
October 8th, 2008 at 9:30 pmI used to think it was important to use your own name, and while I can’t say I totally regret it, I do regret that my family has had to deal with unnecessary drama from people feeling it necessary to find me off blog.
I don’t think anyone’s thoughts here or on their own blogs are rants about nothingness because they mean something to them…You can disagree about the being named versus anonymous factor, but I’ll be glad when this election season is over. It always seems to bring out more meanness than is necessary.
I think Not Again that you were harsher than you needed to be, and I think that Michael has again made some statements directed at an elected official that are uncalled for as well. To me there’s no reason to go in that direction.
October 8th, 2008 at 9:41 pmThere is one Ohio Democrat that stands a chance of losing and that is Zack Space — the guy who replaced Bob Ney.
Kilroy is even in the polls with Stivers. Stivers will ultimately prevail because it is a Republican district.
