Could it be Palin? Updated!
From CNN:
Thursday night’s arrival of a private jet from Alaska at the Middleton, Ohio, airport raised speculation that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin would be McCain’s pick. Middleton is 25 miles from Dayton.
Rich Bevis, an airport manager at the Middleton airport, said that a woman, two men and two teenagers were onboard.
In talking to quite a few people recently, especially moderate to conservative women who had voted for Clinton, the idea of a Palin pick was appealing to them for a variety of reasons. One of which of course is that she is a woman, another was even while dubbed conservative she has demonstrated the ability to stand up to political corruption.
I had a chance to go to Dayton this morning, unfortunately everything here changed plan wise when my husband had to go back to New London, CT due to a critically ill relative. Bearing Drift Ohio is in Dayton, we’ll see how plans to live blog via cell phone from inside go.
This would not be a true historic pick as women have been presidential and vice presidential picks since 1872, it would however be the first time the Republican Party has selected a woman as their vice presidential candidate and only the second time in recent history that either party had done so, the selection of Geraldine Ferraro by Walter Mondale being the first for the Democratic Party.
If you are not that familiar with Palin, this link gives you some of the basics. Which may or may not matter depending on what is announced later today.
Updated: Now CNN is reporting:
With Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty out of the mix, increased speculation over who McCain will pick as has GOP vice presidential nominee has turned toward Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
Sources point to Palin as McCain’s running mate, but CNN has not confirmed.
Update 2: Fox news is reporting: FOX News Confirms Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin Will Be McCain Running Mate with no story yet, it’s their breaking news headline banner – (thanks to Not Again for pointing that out in the comments).
Also as the breaking news banner on CNN: Sen. John McCain picks Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate on GOP ticket for White House, CNN learns.
The Fix weighs in from the Washington Post, also stating it’s Palin. He must have had the post in draft. (lol)
Update 3: this piece from The Corner at National Review (curtsy to Columbuser that covers some of the pluses and minuses of Palin as the pick.
McCain VP Contender Palin in Alaska, Not Ohio
August 29th, 2008 at 9:50 amhttp://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/08/mccain-vp-conte.html
I was born and raised in Alaska but left before Palin’s rise and election, but have paid some attention to her. She would bring gender balance, and the “change” argument being a governor and not a beltway insider. She may face attacks based on recent Alaskan GOP scandal, but as Lisa commented, has stood up against those Republicans in Alaska.
She is attractive, young, and the mother of a special needs child. None of these factors should matter in the choice – but do matter in politics, especially against the democratic party who places form and feelings over substance.
I have not gotten input from family and friends in Alaska on what they think about her as a pick, but if she is chosen, I will find out what citizens of the state think.
Alaska is a prime example of how lower taxes (no state income tax), freedom and liberty (specific privacy clause in the Constitution) and environmentally safe energy development and tourism can bring prosperity to our country and citizens. Alaska is also one of the few, if not only, states to grant native people sovereign rights inside our borders. Dems should love that.

August 29th, 2008 at 9:51 amJeff, I saw the ABC story, but no one had seen her, I wouldn’t expect her aides to say, “Yes, she’s in Ohio”. It’d be like what happened with Biden and the failed text messaging, as soon as the media saw secret service they knew.
Someone from Alaska arrived last night via private jet…
August 29th, 2008 at 9:55 amThanks TAHL, I didn’t realize that is where you were raised. I’ve only been to Alaska once, and I was only there for a few hours. My father was a corporate pilot who used to take me along on trips.
August 29th, 2008 at 9:58 amAt this point it appears that “everyone was notified and they are not the one”.
Maybe it will be Dick Cheney.
August 29th, 2008 at 10:25 amOr maybe it will be Hillary and my prediction will be right, in a way.

August 29th, 2008 at 10:26 amI kind of like this outside the box approach. Government needs reformed so badly and new ways of doing things be taken. She would reinforce McCain’s reformer image. I heard her speak today on cnn and she is very articulate. Biden would have a tough time slamming her in debates and risk offending women. Still most people vote for the top of the ticket anyway but this gives him a way to change the narrative of the campaign.
August 29th, 2008 at 10:28 amman, their daughter is kinda cute (17 is only 3 years away, that is a justifiable gap)
with the exception of abortion and gay rights, i like her
August 29th, 2008 at 10:33 amRemind me to never post pictures of my daughters…
August 29th, 2008 at 10:34 amtoledo is to far too drive, i got lost on the way to not getting there…
Are they kinda cute?
August 29th, 2008 at 10:36 amVery…
August 29th, 2008 at 10:38 amPalin it is. Yea!!!!
August 29th, 2008 at 10:42 amhttp://www.foxnews.com/
This sets up a McCain landslide. Obama hates women.
August 29th, 2008 at 10:43 amim sorry, did i scare you?
August 29th, 2008 at 10:44 amBarga, no I was teasing you.

August 29th, 2008 at 10:47 amNot Again, I don’t think Obama hates women, but if this does end up being confirmed? I think it will make the presidential race even more interesting than it would have been with McCain picking someone like Romney.
August 29th, 2008 at 10:48 amWe know where all those Hillary voters are going to go to now!
Palin has an over 90% aproval rating, will pull in the female vote, looks damned good, and isn’t afraid to drop a dime on unethical shit she sees.
I think she’ll wipe the floor with Biden during the VP debates…and we all know that without a teleprompter, Obama is a stammerring fool.
The icing on the cake is that this will open up Palin for a shot at the presidency…coupled with experience and no filthy baggage like Hillary carries.
August 29th, 2008 at 10:55 amLisa, I hope you will do the right thing and bring your Hillary vote home to Palin.
Can you image it? The first female Vice President of the US?
August 29th, 2008 at 10:57 amIndeed Lisa, this VP pick will make this a good one to watch! Romney and Pawlenty were the tickets to certain defeat…but this changes everything.
August 29th, 2008 at 10:58 amWhere is my checkbook?
August 29th, 2008 at 10:58 amGreat pick McCain – way to get back at the backstabbing Obama.
Hillary fans for Palin 08
Hillary for president in 2012
August 29th, 2008 at 10:59 amNot Again, I always do the right thing, I vote my conscience…
August 29th, 2008 at 10:59 amVery good. Thank you.

August 29th, 2008 at 11:07 amBlock must really be scared because the blade is already bashing Palin.

…if you listen very carefully, you can hear Obama shitting his pants right now!
August 29th, 2008 at 11:16 amYep!
August 29th, 2008 at 11:21 amNot Again, if you look at the article it’s an AP piece, all things considered it’s not that bad. She is younger than Obama, she doesn’t have foreign relations experience. Neither does Obama which is why he brought Biden on, so from a logical standpoint, it could easily be argued that Palin was not brought on to the ticket for her foreign experience. With the huge focus on energy, she appears to be knowledgeable enough on that area.
August 29th, 2008 at 11:22 amSepp I almost laughed out loud.
From what little I know of her she sounds like she has courage and is true to her principals. What a refreshing change of pace. I think this was a very wise choice!!!!
August 29th, 2008 at 11:23 amShe’s a hockey player too. Let’s see the democrats match that!
August 29th, 2008 at 11:27 amPrediction – they will portray her as a nobody, make fun of the way she talks/dresses and will try to diminish what she’s accomplished in Alaska. It’s already starting with some comparing her to Quayle.
She’s not going to be the typical Washington elite, which could very well be a huge plus for some out there. Her position on abortion and gay marriage will not attract some of the hard core Clinton supporters, but it will some of the more moderate women out there.
How will the average conservative male receive her as a candidate will be the question. Which party is more sexist? We are about to discover…

Clinton v. Palin 2012
August 29th, 2008 at 11:31 amBarga – I figured, and at least three of mine are legal. The youngest is 13.
As to your prediction, that would be quite a historic moment.
August 29th, 2008 at 11:35 amCute Not Again…
August 29th, 2008 at 11:35 amPrediction – no matter what the media tries, says or, does…she has a 90+% approval rating that says the media pundits are full of shit on all fronts.
I’ve already been watching her on youtube. Smart, well read, and you don’t get that “is she bullshitting me?” tingle up your spine while she’s talking.
I think she’ll steal the show.
Obama had better have a supply of “depends” on hand because he’ll be shitting frisbees from now on!
August 29th, 2008 at 11:38 amYou were right……..
August 29th, 2008 at 11:44 amhmmmm, legal you say?
August 29th, 2008 at 11:46 amThe response so far and the one story that will be out there as a negative – From Fox:
From CNN:
It seems in reading some of the archives reported in the Alaska news that some of the past behavior of Palin’s sister’s ex-husband became a focus. He was suspended from his job at one point for illegally shooting a moose, drinking on the job and was accused of tasering his stepson as well as other abuse.
There is an investigation and there is a recent editorial stating that the aid should have been fired rather than on paid leave during the investigation.
August 29th, 2008 at 11:56 amIt appears Chris Cillizza is making similar predictions…
August 29th, 2008 at 12:04 pmCNN is going out of it’s way to find anything negative…while on the same page calling Obama’s speech “a masterpiece”.
Yeah they had better pour on the hype (as if they haven’t been anyways). Obama has a fight on his hands now.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:17 pmIf they attack her gender….they are playing with fire….Hillary’s peeps will say enough already…..hold their nose….and vote for JMc.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:18 pmWatching McCain live in Dayton – it appears to be a full house.
It will be interesting hearing from those I know went as to what it was like.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:19 pmDave, nice try at a fake email to post here but? You are banned…Hence? Your comment deleted.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:22 pmInteresting. I am confused about something. McCain would clearly get every conservative vote – no way most would ever vote for an African American. Now, this same right-wing group is forced to choose a “conservative” with a female on the ticket.
The only thing I can see is that any on-the-fence liberal may vote republican simply because of his female choice.
Politics is an ugly game. None of this makes any difference to most; yet there are still a large number of racists/sexists out there with voter registration cards. Where will they vote now?
If nothing else, this November will be historical no matter which team wins.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:24 pmThat’s true Jeff.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:25 pmMcCain Palin 2008
August 29th, 2008 at 12:27 pmWell… at least it wasn’t Romney.
This pick makes this election a little bit more interesting. I just hope that the candidates can quit with the slamming of each other and start focusing on how they plan on running this country.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:29 pminsulting.
http://bloggerinterrupted.com/2008/08/vagina-monologue-john-mccain-insults-women-with-his-vp-pick
August 29th, 2008 at 12:30 pmYou are entitled to your opinion Tim, but you don’t speak for women anymore than I could claim too. All I can speak for is those that have spoken to me…and myself.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:32 pmIf you’d alter your progressive political ideology twice just for the sake of supporting someone with a vagina between their legs, then who and/or what would you give-up, abanndon and/or deny a relationship? You’re a flip-flopping salamander woman which is not an attractive or genuine trait
August 29th, 2008 at 12:39 pmSeriously Dave, now trying to get your friends unless it’s just you again, to post here for you is just going to create a scenario where they are banned too.
Especially since you are posting from the same exact IP address. If you were intelligent enough to notice, I have not yet said who I was going to vote for. I am not going to be bullied or insulted and frankly? I could care less what you or Dave think about my decision when I make it.
I will vote my conscience, which does not mean blindly doing what I am told to do or succumb to pressure from anyone, especially not people that don’t have a clue as to what a “true progressive” even is or what I am.
And Abbey, this blog is NOT a progressive blog, it’s a blog designed for the residents of this area no matter which political party if ANY they personally support. I’ve never claimed for it to be a progressive blog, unlike you and Dave, it’s not about me.
I’d also suggest that supporting someone who is abusive, and threatens/stalks women is not exactly an attractive or genuine trait either. Which is why your friend Dave is the only person in the two year history of this blog to be banned. I’d suggest that perhaps like your friend, you’d be happier elsewhere on the blogosphere than here. I won’t tolerate your or his crap.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:43 pmI have to spend the entire weekend next to the most abnoxious right-winger I have ever met. He has sent me so much hate mail regarding why nobody should vote for Obama. I actually had to tell him to knock it off it was so misguided.
However, with McCain’s VP choice the only way I could possibly enjoy my upcoming weekend more is if surfaces she is/was either a lesbian or partner in a mixed-race relationship.
Thank you John McCain and have a great Labor Day!
August 29th, 2008 at 12:58 pmLisa, a progressive is a socialist who just hasn’t come out of the closet yet.
It is nice to see that the socialists are also shitting frisbees over McCain’s VP choice.
To counter “Abbey / Dave”, Palin might have a vagina but, the lady has BALLS too!
Dave is just reeling back in horror that O’whatshisname will need more than just star power after today.
Palin is no Geraldine Farraro by a long shot and a…THE big plus to the GOP ticket.
August 29th, 2008 at 12:58 pm…This is gonna be good!

What do ya mean no experience. She has Russia on one side, Canada on the other.
Just wandering in Toledo.
August 29th, 2008 at 1:04 pmrent
Sepp, I disagree with you that being progressive equals being a socialist who hasn’t come out of the closet yet. The term progressive just as the term liberal has been taken beyond it’s original intent. Considering myself progressive does not equal what Dave/Abbey may feel it is. One of my favorite quotes:
August 29th, 2008 at 1:05 pmValid point Rentapen but she doesn’t have proven foreign relations experience, which will be brought up as an issue. This does change the argument about experience, how much? Remains to be seen.
In fact the pundits on CNN are debating that right now. With the one CNN Obama supporter stating along Tim’s line, that it’s dismissive to women to pick her.
August 29th, 2008 at 1:08 pmHickamania, that wasn’t nice.
August 29th, 2008 at 1:12 pmAnd what did I hear that her husband is part Indian. First Native family in Whitehouse.
August 29th, 2008 at 1:13 pmJust wondering in Toledo.
rent
The Obama camp is saying she doesn’t have the experience to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency. This is coming from Obama. How laughable. Obama is the least qualified out of the four people running. Sarah Palin is a Governor. She is the leader of her state. What experience does Obama have? If they choose to try and use this, Obama will only have it handed to him. He believes he is the appointed one.
August 29th, 2008 at 1:13 pmDave/Abbey/Hickamania are all the same person – and if you think what he writes here is not nice, his personal emails have been worse, which is why he’s not welcome here. He keeps switching IP’s, and I have tried not to ban this ip he’s using because there are OSU students who do comment here, it’s not fair to have have them not be able to comment because of one jerk.
So he gets a few moments of blog space until I delete him. And to be honest? People like him make me less inclined to want to support anyone that he would…
August 29th, 2008 at 1:14 pmI think there are a lot of white apologists that support obama just because he is black. These are the “progressive”/socialist types.
August 29th, 2008 at 1:14 pmThere are some who have stated they are voting for Obama because of his race, which ironically seems to be more acceptable than voting for someone because of their sex.
I think it should be based on more than that.
August 29th, 2008 at 1:19 pmI’m surprised that someone with so little political eperience could be considered. It does appear to be a selection directed at disaffected Hillary supporters, but it also appears that Gov. Palin’s social views are out of step with that group of voters.
It remains to be seen how effective she’ll be on the national stage. I know more about the former Monty Python group member Michael Palin than I do about her.
What stands out the most to me is her paper thin resume. I also believe this makes McCain a risky choice based on his age and the fact that Gov Palin would be a heart-beat away from the presidency. It is a more interesting choice however than Romney, Pawlenty, etc.
August 29th, 2008 at 1:20 pmYeah, don’t screw it over for the rest of us OSU students
Okay, with this pick it is now between who has more expierence harming Washington, that is Obamas main argument and McCains constant claim. Who hates washington more?
August 29th, 2008 at 1:21 pmAlso appears to be true Rentapen according to wiki:
Palin’s husband, Todd, is a Yup’ik Alaskan native. Outside the fishing season, Todd works for BP at an oil field on Alaska’s North Slope and is a champion snowmobiler, winning the 2000-mile “Iron Dog” race four times.
August 29th, 2008 at 1:21 pmI vote what I believe. I don’t care what color the person is. I just want their views to match mine.

Mark, think about Obama’s campaign: outsider, new, fresh outlook, etc.
August 29th, 2008 at 1:22 pmPalin is all of that, she took down her entire party in her state. She is new, outside, fresh, AND anti-corruption. HIts all of his targets.
That should secure the native indian vote. I like our chances more and more. Obama has no chance now! Hee hee.
August 29th, 2008 at 1:24 pmAnyone know her position on Anwar drilling?
August 29th, 2008 at 1:30 pmSimilar to Obama’s decision – Biden will either be looked back on as the smart decision or a mistake. The same will be said for McCain deciding to pick Palin.
August 29th, 2008 at 1:30 pmI stand by the statement. The “progressives” always support socialist agenda. The only reason we have politicians who call themselves “progressive” is because they know that saying “socialist” is political poison.
August 29th, 2008 at 1:33 pmThe progressives and progress (IE moving forward) have nothing in common.
She is 100% for tapping Alaska’s resources…as are the majority of the Alaskans!
August 29th, 2008 at 1:34 pmDave, if you comment on my blog one more time, or send me one more email I will notify OSU’s internet abuse person as well as the various email providers you have used and report you for violations of TOS.
I’ve wasted more than enough time on your bs and I will not allow you to create a scenario where OSU students can not visit/comment on my blog.
If that doesn’t work? I’ll turn to the ORC. Considering you have been repeatedly asked to stop, and considering I have every single email saved? It could be considered within the standards for harassment by electronic medium. I’m not like my blogging peers who have fun playing with you.
August 29th, 2008 at 2:05 pmI am truly not surprised by this 11th hour choice of Sarah Palin. While she may be very astute in her state politics, it appears to me (IMO) that McCain chose her based on her gender first.
And anyone that chooses another person solely on gender is a fool. The same goes for skin color.
I think McCain pulled this stunt because Obama did not choose Hillary Clinton as his VP candidate. I truly believe that McCain feels that he can steal quite a few votes just by gender recognition.
While I do not agree 100% with either side, I do believe that Obama has a stronger “team” presentation. If something were to happen to him during his term in office (God forbid) then we would have Joe Biden as our President. Sen. Biden has extensive experience in foreign affairs/relations and is not afraid to take that bull by the horns. His ideals are taken seriously by our world neighbors and are respected.
If something happened to McCain while in office (God forbid) we would have Sarah Palin as our President. IMO running this country is a far cry from running the state of Alaska. Just by sheer population numbers.
This is certainly going to cause some ripples in the political waters and will make the Republican convention an interesting study.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:16 pm[...] Glass City Jungle – Claims to not even be a “progressive blog” though BNN thinks so. No clue on Lisa Renee’s stance here. She seems to like Palin in a way and is trying to be neutral in another. She will only tell us she “votes her conscience”. Good to know, but far from taking a stance. [...]
August 29th, 2008 at 3:30 pmCarol, appearing to be pandering to women is one of the concerns some raised if McCain picked a woman. Some could feel the same way you do. Others are having an opposite initial reaction.
The unofficial phone/email response so far has been very supportive of the Palin pick. That said? It’s early and that’s the first impression, but I do have to say it’s been more positive towards Palin than Biden was.
August 29th, 2008 at 3:34 pmI just saw the replay of the Palin speech on Fox News and I was greatly impressed with her. I had tears in my eyes. Of course, no one was around to see my lashes fall off. I think she could be president some day.
McCain is a bold and audacious leader! And the dems are dead meat!
August 29th, 2008 at 7:33 pmI was impressed that Sarah Palin can speak without the aid of a teleprompter. Barry should take lessons.
My condolences on your shorn lashes, Not Again. You would think with Oprah’s kind of money she could get herself a better glue.
August 30th, 2008 at 1:00 am“Palin was able to cut property taxes by three-quarters while eliminating small taxes such as the personal property tax and the business inventory tax. She wasn’t doing this by shrinking government, however: The cost of running the growing city, apart from capital projects and debt, rose from $3.9 million in fiscal 1996 to $5.8 million in fiscal 2002. Excess sales tax revenues went to paying for capital improvements such as roads and government buildings, says city finance director Ted Leonard.
Palin had priorities. She shrank the local museum’s budget and deterred talk of a new library and city hall. But she also put in bike paths and obtained funds for storm-water treatment to protect the area’s many lakes. She successfully pushed a half-percent sales tax increase to build a $15 million multi-use indoor ice arena. The popular sports complex is not breaking even, as its advocates projected, but the city’s subsidy has been cut from $600,000 to $125,000 a year.”
“Another disconnect is with the state’s Native corporations. Palin backed away from a scheduled meeting with Native executives several weeks ago, her campaign conceding she wasn’t ready to talk about tribal recognition and other Native concerns raised by the group. Subsistence was prominent on the executives’ list.”

‘Creation science’ enters the race
GOVERNOR: Palin is only candidate to suggest it should be discussed in schools.
By TOM KIZZIA
Anchorage Daily News
Published: October 27, 2006
Last Modified: October 30, 2006 at 09:40 AM
The volatile issue of teaching creation science in public schools popped up in the Alaska governor’s race this week when Republican Sarah Palin said she thinks creationism should be taught alongside evolution in the state’s public classrooms.
Palin was answering a question from the moderator near the conclusion of Wednesday night’s televised debate on KAKM Channel 7 when she said, “Teach both. You know, don’t be afraid of information. Healthy debate is so important, and it’s so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both.”

Which was deleted…yet saved thanks to the wonders of email.
August 30th, 2008 at 12:48 pmWhoe….potty mouth alert…..reflects on his mama….
August 30th, 2008 at 1:15 pmPalin’s husband is 1/4 Yup’ik, a subgroup of the Eskimos, according to Wikipedia, though I’ve also seen 1/8th mentioned elsewhere. But Todd Palin and their kids wouldn’t be the first Native Americans “in the White House” (actually the VP lives at the United States Naval Observatory). Herbert Hoover’s VP, Charles Curtis, was nearly half Indian.
August 30th, 2008 at 2:26 pmTo those who say Palin was chosen b/c of her gender – does that mean that the DNC chose Obama b/c of his race?
You can’t have it both ways
Unless you’re a hypocrite. I see that alot in politics.
August 30th, 2008 at 3:29 pmThe DNC chose Obama because he was elected by the voters. Palin was chosen by McCain.
August 30th, 2008 at 5:30 pmThe DNC had the elbow out for Obama. Very early on. If you don’t think he was hand picked early then we just disagree.
August 30th, 2008 at 9:30 pmObama is where he is because he is black. A reasonable person can see that.
August 30th, 2008 at 11:02 pm“If you don’t think he was hand picked early then we just disagree.”
Kate, tell that to all of the Clinton supporters/pundits/media who felt her candidacy was “inevitable”.
August 31st, 2008 at 12:14 amWatching the announcement I couldn’t help but notice a concerned look on McCain’s face as Palin spoke. I personally think this vp choice is probably a good thing for his campaign. But I wonder just how much he was involved with it. He appeared very concerned about what she was going to say especially during the “glass ceiling” part of her speech.
Just an observation. I think the race is now going to be really interesting. When do you think the “he’s inexperienced” commercials will get pulled off the media airways by the RNC?
August 31st, 2008 at 7:33 amFor the record, Obama was helped by racisim just as much as Clinton was helped by Sexisim. Frankly, Obama won because the far left of the party got enough support out, not anything else.
August 31st, 2008 at 10:18 amkateb…Voters choose presidential nominees. In modern times. presidential nominees choose running mates. There is little doubt that Hillary Clinton was the early choice of most Democratic leaders. Early in the process, Hillary had the support of about twice as many “super” delegates as did Obama. When you see “super” delegates, replace with “state and local party leaders”. Early in the 2004 nomination race, people were anointing Howard Dean.
No one should treat the Democartic Primary results as though Obama streaked to a one-sided victory. Hillary Clinton was extremely close. Few Obama supporters voted for him because he is black. Few Hillary supporters voted for her because she is a woman. Both sincerely believed that their favored candidate had the best chance to win the White House and put in place policies that will put this country back on the positive track where it was until 2001. In fact, many Hillary supporters expressed to me that they supported her despite the fact that they thought that a majority of Americans would vote for a black male before they would vote for a female of any ethnicity or race. On the other hand, many Obama supporters expressed their belief that a majority of Americans would vote for a white woman before they would vote for anyone who was black!
What’s the point? Both had a lot of support. Their supporters are deeply committed to each candidate. That’s why Palin was selected by McCain! The McCain people feel that a significant number of Hillary’s supporters are so committed to her as a female candidate that they will vote for McCain instead of Obama since McCain selected a woman to run with him. It’s just that simple! Does anyone really think that McCain would have selected Palin, or any other Republican woman for that matter, if Obama had selected Hillary to be his running mate? It’s a cold, calculated political move that has absolutely nothing to do with selecting the best Republican to be a “heartbeat away from the presidency”, and the heartbeat from an old heart at that! The goal is to win, period, end of sentence!

Sarah Palin’s Record on Alaska Native and Tribal Issues
“3. Palin has attacked Alaska Tribal Sovereignty
Governor Palin opposes Alaska tribal sovereignty.
Given past court rulings affirming the federally recognized tribal status of Alaska Native villages, Palin does not technically challenge that status. But Palin argues that Alaska Tribes have no authority to act as sovereigns, despite their recognition.
So extreme is Palin on tribal sovereignty issues that she has sought to block tribes from exercising any authority whatsoever even over the welfare of Native children, adhering to a 2004 legal opinion issued by the former Murkowski Administration that no such jurisdiction exist (except when a state court transfers a matter to a tribal court).
Both the state courts and the federal courts have struck down Palin’s policy of refusing to recognize the sovereign authority of Alaska Tribes to address issues involving Alaska Native children. Native Village of Tanana v. State of Alaska, 3AN-04-12194 CI (judgment entered Aug. 26, 200
(Ak. Super. Ct.); Kaltag Tribal Council v. DHHS, No. 3:06-cv-00211-TMB (D. Ak.), pending on appeal No 08-35343 (9th Cir.)). Nonetheless, Palin’s policy of refusing to recognize Alaska tribal sovereignty remains unchanged.”
