Toledo Free Press: Traitors, Partnerships and more…

10 Aug 2008

The cover story for in this week’s Toledo Free Press has a post of it’s own written when the news was first released about United Way’s plans to build a new building. There were quite a few other articles that caught my interest besides of course the Blog it! Toledo which may be possible for the current cool weather. (Okay probably not but it was ironic writing about how hot it was for me and then have the cool down.) Michael Miller’s piece on Traitors caught my attention, as a history buff, I wondered about some other possible additions out there, world wide and in American History. The topic of were the Sons of Liberty heroes or traitors is one that has been debated…

Karl Rundgren’s column for this week, entitled, Making Friends is a recommended read, his last paragraph causes one to think about the “what if’s”:

Staring across that table, I couldn’t help but wish that FOX Toledo was the City of Toledo, and the other media groups represented suburban communities. It would be an unlikely group sitting at the same table, sharing lunch and ideas, striving toward common goals. Many people think it’s impossible, but 10 years ago I would have said the same thing about these media groups. I was resistant the first time Steve shared the idea only two years ago. Now I see the wisdom behind it — and all of us remain viable.

There are several “briefs” in this week’s edition, one focuses on Keith Wilkowski representing Block Communications in a lawsuit filed by WOHL-TV. Since part of the lawsuit involves “industry secrets” most of the filing has been redacted and Judge Richard Warren has told both sides to not discuss the lawsuit, though it is interesting that only outside of Toledo has it been stated who is the lawyer for Block Communication, until now that is…

Besides the Blog it! Toledo column, there are several great articles in the Exclusively Online category, including one from Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray. It appears my horoscope for this week looks promising, so either in print or online, there are many articles of interest on a variety of topics in this week’s Toledo Free Press.

Wilkowski is representing the blade? THAT right there is the first reason not to vote for him for mayor since he’s already in bed with JRB.

    LisaRenee Says:

Well, it’s Block communications which owns the Blade, the lawsuit doesn’t involve the Blade.

Traitors you say just ask ramon about that. voter

Toledo is swimming with lawyers and, many who are a few rungs higher on the totem pole than Wilkowski. I just find it a bit more than pure coincidence that Wilk is running for mayor and the Blocks chose him as representation. Look for the mayoral endorsement that is forthcomming!

    LisaRenee Says:

I dunno, he’s high enough on the attorney rung to represent TPS in the whole City versus Marina funding, and he also is the attorney who did the filing for the Toledo Municipal Court Judges against the City of Toledo.

I don’t know if he’s represented Block communications before, but if he did prior to deciding to run for Mayor either this time or the last time, it would be even less of an issue. Or…what if he doesn’t win since it was the tv station that filed against Block communications? Would it be said that if he doesn’t get their endorsement that was a reason?

    Brian Maxson Says:

Keith Wilkowski has officially lost my endorsement.

THAT in itself could be a large problem for K.W.

    He may as well withdraw.

    Ron Korsog Says:

I think he also represented Rossford and helped them put together that deal for the ampitheater that never got off the ground.

    -Sepp Says:

Ford was in bed with the Blocks.
Carty IS in bed with the Blocks.
Wilkowski is being invited to bed by the Blocks.

Do we really need our next mayor to be taking orders from an office on Superior st while ignoring the citizens again?

    LisaRenee Says:

It depends, do you judge him based on one lawsuit for the Blocks or for the lawsuits he’s filed against the City?

  11. 11
    -Sepp Says:

I’m judging him on the idea that as a mayoral candidate, he’s being courted by the Blocks to see just how well he plays ball.
Mark my words, if elected, Wilk will be doing the bidding of whatever agenda flows from Superior st.

Historically speaking, the last 2 mayors and most of city council will sell their souls to the blade to avoid bad press.

Do what JRB says…and bad things are either ommitted or, buried back in the want adds someplace. Go against JRB’s agendas and you end up on the front page with the most unflattering file photo they can find.
Just ask Dom Montalto, John Irish, Ray Kest and Jim Hartung, Maggie Thurber, Donna Owens, Betty Schultz and Sandy Isenberg what happens when you try to go against the grain!
As a politco in Toledo, you either kiss JRB’s ass or, your spitting on the sidewalk is scandalized as if you were an axe murderer on the front page everyday until you either tow the line or, lose your job.

    Brian Maxson Says:

Anyone willing to take money from this manipulator has nothing but his own interests in mind.

Keith has enough money to sustain himself without having to add tainted faux-wealth.

Money does not buy a reputation, but it can sure destroy one.

    LisaRenee Says:

Sepp, considering all of those you listed, how do you expect someone in Toledo to be elected Mayor if they are hated by the local daily?

I don’t dispute they have too much power, I’ve watched what they’ve done selectively to some and not to others. However, unless Toledo wakes up and sees that? The reality is being hated by the Blade almost guarantees you won’t be elected.

  14. 14
    -Sepp Says:

Indeed Lisa can’t be elected without the blade’s golden stamp. That is why we end up with Carty’s and Ford’s as mayor while people who have the smarts to run Toledo effectively are also smart enough to NOT allow their reputation or, their family members to be humiliated on the front page.

The blade isn’t being run by a man who has an interest in reporting news as much as he enjoys steering agenda.

I’m left to wonder exactly how many of Toledo’s leaders past and present have made decisions based on what personal information would end up as frontpage news as opposed to what was good for Toledo?

As with Kest and Hartung, how well they did their jobs was never a factor and never mentioned. Their personal lives however were slashed open for all to see and, even after they lost their jobs, it still wasn’t enough. Hartung is going to be hounded until he leaves while just last year, the blade was still trying to smear Kest at his job in Florida! Shame, public humiliation, job loss and almost in the poor house, JRB found Ray teaching 950 miles away in Florida and tried to damage his job there too!

Fear, blackmail, coercion, intimidation and retribution are the tools of organized crime. But, as long as you own a newspaper it’s perfectly legal?
