52% expected to vote in primary…
My first reaction was “wow”, that would be a higher percentage than normal if the predictions made by the Secretary of State as reported in the Blade, 52 percent of Ohio voters to participate in primary end up being the number.
In 2004 – 32.84% was the turnout with 7,204,856 registered voters, 2,365,969 voted in the presidential primary.
In 2000 – 34.9% was the turn out with 7,229,511 registered voters, 2,526,590 voted in the presidential primary.
In 1996 – 29.53% was the turn out with 6,614,085 registered voters, 1,953,639 voted in the presidential primary.
In 1992 they did a separate tabulation – 1,233,263 Democrats voted – 967,976 Republicans voted.
In 1988 – 1,462,927 Democrats voted in the primary – 852,116 Republicans voted in the primary.
So, it appears if the prediction of 52% holds, it will be one of the highest number of primary voters in quite some time.

Lisa,
I wouldn’t hold my breath…
I would expect maybe a slight increase, perhaps to about 35%.
Well, that’s my guess anyway.
March 1st, 2008 at 10:14 amConsidering other states in the past caucuses and primaries this year, they were recording the highest turnouts in the longest time (45-65% average). I’m thinking Ohio could pull off a 55% at least in the turnout considering the stagnant economy statewide.
March 1st, 2008 at 10:38 amI’m sure Toledo will have it’s usual 12% turnout.

March 3rd, 2008 at 3:40 pmIf the lines this weekend at 1 Gov Center were any indication, I’d venture a guess that 52% might be a reality.
March 3rd, 2008 at 4:08 pmLet’s hope it’s that high of a percentage! But with the impending weather, especially if we end up with freezing rain and/or icy roads, I predict that morning turn outs will be lower, but that it will pick up in the afternoon/evening.
