South Toledo coach indicted for sexual misconduct and rape of minors
This story reported by two media sources so far, WTOL and FOX Toledo. I know FOX will have more at ten p.m. on this story, WTOL might as well.
David Millhoan, Sr was the commissioner of the S.T.A.R.S. League (South Toledo Area Recreation Society) here in Toledo, a group I covered two years ago when they reached their 50th anniversary. He was indicted by a grand jury today for three counts of rape, four counts of gross sexual imposition, and two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. The victims reportedly are aged 11 and 13.
He was also the coach for the Colts team, which recruited players from Jones Jr. High and the Jones elementary feeder schools. It was known that he had a cottage outside of the Toledo area and at times took players with him. Parents obviously trusted him with their children outside of just playing football, it’s not clear how far back this investigation went to see if there are other victims.
This is just insane! Living in this community, I know most of the boys that are part of this organization. I do not know this man, but hope he pays for taking advantage of some of these vulnerable kids that trusted him…
February 12th, 2010 at 8:30 pmI agree Sandy, if he’s proven guilty, he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and I hope investigators talked to other youth from previous years so that if there are more than two victims, that’s addressed.
February 12th, 2010 at 8:33 pmWhen I received the text alert at my sons bball practice, I thought i was going to throw up…These kids needed a positive figure, not what he has done to them. Now these kids will have so many mental issues to deal with and we wonder what is wrong with our youth? I hope these boys get the proper assistance from our community. They are going to need all the services available. And we all know with State and Federal cuts, not too many mental health facilities are available… I just feel so sad..
February 12th, 2010 at 8:39 pmHe may be guilty, which if true then I agree with you but, there have been situations where a person was found innocent of accusations, which is why I try to always include, if guilty or if proven. Many times we assume or rush to judgment and some of those thoughts may end up being 100% correct but he has not pled guilty nor been found guilty yet.
Since this just happened, there’s lots we don’t know yet.
February 12th, 2010 at 8:51 pmThis is incredibly sad
My heart goes out to the kids and their families.
February 12th, 2010 at 9:56 pmAnother sad, disgusting story.
And now when you think about the S.T.A.R.S league, this is what you will think of. All of the other fantastic, generous and dedicated coaches will be looked at, scrutinized and second guessed because it seems that you just can’t trust anyone.
To this day I still think of and respect my coaches from the league 35 years ago and what great people the are (and were in some cases).
What a mess. I hope to God there were no other victims.
February 13th, 2010 at 4:14 amTaking advantage of kids In one of the worst ways, a coach should be a mentor. Sick twisted individual!
February 13th, 2010 at 7:05 amI remember the STARS league, grew up in SToledo. But back then Jones was the Bears, not the Colts. They also did away with the Broncos that were HDowns/Harvard.
February 13th, 2010 at 11:56 amGuilty or not I find some parents too trusting of others with their kids. I know there are many faces of evil, but I saw a picture of this man and he looks scary. If these allegations are true, I hope these boys get the support they need.
February 13th, 2010 at 1:06 pmJeff’s comments (#6) is right on target. Let’s hope that we don’t lose all faith in our fellow human beings. The vast majority of those who donate their time and energy for the youth of our community should not be stigmatized because of the rare, sick pervert.
All of the children who knew this coach, victims of not, should have appropriate counseling available to them. What a tragic situation this is!
February 13th, 2010 at 4:58 pmYour absolutely right Dale and Jeff…as a volunteer in our schools, I would hate to ever have a “stigma”. I do what I do because I honestly care and want to make a positive impact in these children’s lives. But, in today’s society- we must be careful as parents. I always try to keep the faith of good in humanity, but seeing the challenges these kids face each and everyday, it is hard. I do believe there is more good than bad. However, when you live in the environment of drugs, violence, poverty and neglect, it is hard to believe what these kids endure at home. Then to have the possibility of the one person who did CARE for them, rob them of their innocence….
My son is able to start on this league this summer…I will continue to allow him to play, Because I know there are good people out there. I will do my job as a parent and I will let coaches do their job in coaching and I will be thankful to them, as I always am!
February 13th, 2010 at 9:47 pm>> But back then Jones was the Bears, not the Colts.
Jones had 2 teams – the Bears and the Colts; at least way back when.
February 14th, 2010 at 5:51 amLisa Renee or does anyone know what this David Millhoan, Sr does as a profession or other jobs, or community affiliations besides Commissioner or Coach of this League??
On the news it states he has been given a Court appointed attorney.
February 17th, 2010 at 7:57 pmFrom what I understand he was a driver for one of the local senior centers.
February 17th, 2010 at 10:01 pmThanks, Lisa Renee!
Yes, when I saw him on the TV news today I thought that I knew him only I did not know his last name until now.
He has driving the transportation bus for the Senior Citizen Center (which right now I will not mention) and also part time for one of the taxi companies. Prior to that he had been let go from TARPS as a dispatcher for a number of years.
I also know who some of his family is and I am sure that this is difficult for them.
Whatever the truth is, I hope that it does come out!
