Ujvagi releases on HB 46 & Auto Support Council

18 Dec 2009

These two releases were from earlier in the week but a glitch prevented them from being shared at that time from Representative Peter Ujvagi. One is on HB 46 which extends unemployment coverage to spouses impacted by a military transfer, the second one is related to the Auto Support Council.

Rep. Ujvagi and Ohio House Pass Legislation to extend unemployment compensation benefits to the spouses of Ohio’s military men and women

Bill Expands benefits for military families

COLUMBUS – State Representative Peter S. Ujvagi (D-Toledo) and the Ohio House of Representatives today passed House Bill 46 which extends unemployment compensation benefits to the spouses of Ohio’s military men and women in the event of unemployment due to their spouses’ military transfer.

“I am pleased that the House came together to assist the spouses of our military men and women,” Rep. Ujvagi said. “Military families make tremendous sacrifices, especially now in times of active mobilization, frequent moves, challenges such as school transitions for their children, and separation of the family are just a few. A military spouse often must work to meet the financial needs of the family not unlike the rest of us who depend upon dual income to avoid hardship”.

H.B. 46 extends unemployment compensation benefits to the spouses of Ohio’s military men and women who have to quit their jobs due to their spouses’ military transfer. A military spouse often must work to meet the financial needs of the family not unlike the general population. Under previous law, spouses who quit their job to follow their husband or wife’s transfer were not afforded such benefits because the termination did not result from the fault of the employer. The fiscal facts of this bill present a cost-effective scenario to help Ohio military families.

House Bill 46 passed the Ohio House by a vote of 92 to 5 and is now being sent to the Senate.

Rep. Ujvagi attends Auto Industry Support Council

Ohio’s efforts to strengthen our states’ automotive industrial base as well as to transition companies who were former suppliers to the auto industry to new technology manufacturing opportunities continued at Monday’s meeting of the Governor’s Auto Industry Support Council.

As the co-chairs of the council, Mr. Eric Burkland, President, The Ohio Manufacturers’ Association and Mr. Ken Lortz, Director, Region 2-B UAW stated, it is Governor Strickland’ and the Councils’ commitment that:

* Ohio continue to be an automobile producing state, with the capacity of selling cars all over the world
* Develop the strategies to make it happen, to promote collaboration of industrial suppliers and to conduct business in a way we have not done before, and
* Build on the highly skilled manufacturing of the past, for the future in automotive and emerging technological manufacturing. .

Rep. Peter Ujvagi, a member of the commission from Northwest Ohio noted that we need to support the entrepreneurial efforts of our manufactures with access to capital, retraining and upgrading of worker skill for real jobs of the future, as well as the ability of companies to reposition themselves to compete both for new automotive technology job opportunities and other technologies.

Ujvagi also urged the Council to consider the “flexible manufacturing” initiatives that the University of Toledo Urban Affairs Center has been developing. As many large companies seek to reduce their supplier base, the flexible manufacturing concept enables a number of small companies to join together to bid for business opportunities as a group, thereby being able to become more competitive against larger bidders.

Governor Ted Strickland and numerous interested stakeholders participated in the council’s deliberation.

Members of the Council include: Mr. Denny Wojtanowski, President, Mr. John Begala, Senator Capri Cafaro, Mr. Tim Doran, Chancellor Eric Fingerhut, Representative Jay Goyal, Dr. Ned Hill, Dr. Steve Johnson, Mr. Douglas Lumpkin, Representative Ross McGregor, Ms. Lisa Patt-McDaniel, Dr. Giorgio Rizzoni, and Senator Mark Wagoner.
