Rolling Stones 100 one songs of the decade leaving some…blue

12 Dec 2009

While I would put Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” as one of my favorite songs, I actually play it and sing it often, I admit I was surprised to see it be the number one song of the past decade…

Not surprisingly, there are some reading the Rolling Stone’s 100 Best Songs of the Decade who are really taking issue with some the songs selected and some of the songs that didn’t make it on their list.

I can’t believe songs like Seether’s “Broken” didn’t make the top 100 yet Kanye West and Beyonce had more than one song on the top 100…

What song are you surprised didn’t make the top 100 of the decade?

Nothing from: Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Kid Rock, Reba? I am not surprised that Kry West or Beyonce’ was on the list but why did Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keys only have one song(on the list)? Where is Carrie Underwood? Isn’t Lady GaGa new? Kelis “Milkshake” to me is a catchy tune and that’s the only song I know of hers(I do know that she was just awarded over $ 50,000/month between spousal support and child support). R Kelly made the list? I guess I can be happy that they chose a pre child porn allegations vs a post (not guilty) song. Rihanna with “Umbrella”, I guess since her money supporter is Jay Z and his wife is Bey I shouldn’t be surprised she is on the list(Umbrella was first offered to MJB) I can’t imagine MJB singing that “kiddie” song, but that is the only song I like that Rihanna sings(or tries to sing). We are talking about a decade of music. Where is Barry Manilow, Rod Stewart, Harry Connck Jr, Michael Jackson, I heard 2010 will be all about Elvis, being he would have turned 75. Artist who have been around for awhile always put out “The Best Hits” CD. Oh well my rant is over. That was fun. Thanks. FYI, I may not know everyone on the list but were there any rock songs?

White Stripes, Coldplay, Radiohead, Green Day, those could be some called “rock songs” — which you do raise a good point, most of the songs there are not really what you and I would classify as “rock” — Good point about Alicia Keys, Fallin’ should have ranked higher than 62. Alanis Morissette didn’t make the list, nor Creed, Lifehouse, I could go on…

In reading the comments on the Rolling Stone website, quite a few people took issue with the list, few agreed with it, which makes me wonder, who voted?

singles are nice but the long-term memorable or important songs won’t be known for at least 10 years – the albums are pretty evident already and a quick view of RS albums seems pretty good – my fav album (wilco’s yankee hotel foxtrot) was third on the list. lots of radiohead, dylan, the shins, strokes, stripes. while i don’t listen to marshall mathers jay-z outkast or alicia, it is clear they are quite talented and are well represented.

i’m surprised “snails” by the format didn’t make the singles list. it made a big splash and was retro in the vein of the band the association.

I don’t think anything that I listen to made the top 100.

They play nice music but the message is that of marxism.

not again – i think the demberists are not so much marxists as theatrical. they have adopted an affectation as the rock band from a brecht musical which would have been all caught up in the russian revolution/marxist movement/wwI zeigeist – its kind of matching their strengths to a niche.

robin – what do you listen to that would not make the top 100?
