The Truth: Tolliver takes aim at pastors who supported Issue 3 and more…

29 Nov 2009

The “This Strikes Us” column in this week’s Sojourner’s Truth focuses on the health care bill that is now before the Senate. Since it’s been something mentioned here, it is an opinion piece that may be of interest to some of you.

There was no column by Jack Ford this week, but a guest column by Lafe Tolliver, Say Pastor…My Tithe Is on Red 22!! drew my attention this week. There are times I disagree with Tolliver and some of his satire, there are times when I really enjoy what he’s written. While I recommend heading over and reading it in full? A small taste of what he shared:

My fondest hope is that any…”roll them dices” pastor will continue to show their support for the casinos by having Sunday tours with their senior and married couples groups. Simply cut down the worship service time and take the church bus to these gaming cathedrals, get the Sunday lunch special for $4.99 and then have an enjoyable half-day feeding the dime slots.

You have not seen happy until you see dozens of gray-haired Christian men and women blowing on red dice clutched in their hands and throwing them down onto that promised land of green felt tables. Wow! It will make you wanna get your praise on, girl!

Now, if all goes well, and it should, I do not see any reason why churches should not grubstake some of their more trustworthy elders and deacons with a little bit of the building fund monies so as to try to double it with a few harmless hands of Seven Card Stud. I mean..come on! It is all in fun! Who is it hurting?

Hey, so what if we get a little spin off of bankrupt families or spousal abuse since the husband took the rent money and believed that the pastor’s sermon that the Mark of the Beast being 666 was really code meaning to bet six hundred and sixty six dollars on Red 11… no sweat.

There is always the savings or the kid’s college fund that can be used to get back any losses.

After all, if a pastor is backing casino gambling and he or she is God’s man or woman, surely they would not steer you wrong…or would they?

The question of “is gambling a sin” is a popular one, the answer is a complicated one for some, and for others? They identify it as a sin.

There are several other articles in this week’s Truth that might interest you, including one on the United Way Attacking Issue of High School Dropouts.
