Taking news reporting then adding public record information.
I am not singling NBC24 out to pick on them, I’ll write that first, because at times they are only reporting the information that they are given by the authorities, but this one story that I read created a scenario for me where public record information adds to the story and contradicts some of what was reported, so it’s a good example. Gunmen burst into North Toledo home is the story:
TOLEDO — Toledo Police are asking for the public’s help in solving an attempted burglary that led to a North Toledo homeowner being injured Monday night.
Police say four masked men burst into a home at 3329 Blackstone Dr. around 10:30 p.m. Monday. The armed suspects shot the homeowner, Vincent Saldivar, once before fleeing the home.
Saldivar’s condition is unknown.
First when you check Aries, 3329 Blackstone is not listed to Vincent Saldivar, it’s listed as being owned by Vincent E. Stewart and Angela Wynn-Stewart, they have the tax bills forwarded to a Maumee PO Box, and they own quite a few more properties, which means Saldivar is a renter, not the homeowner. Secondly, if you check public record information on Vincent Saldivar, one who has a birthdate of 01/25/1990, has prior brushes with the court system, including a 2009 case where he was found guilty for Disorderly Conduct Recklessly by Fighting, Threatening Harm or in Violent or Turbulent Behavior. There’s a bench warrant out for him for not paying the fines in the case. He was also charged with Assault stemming from the same court case but that was dropped because the victim failed to appear.
There is only one Vincent Saldivar that appears in the Lucas County voter database, the year of birth matches the one referenced in the Toledo Municipal Court case. Is the one who was shot Monday night the same one? Possible, and if so, does the prior case have something to do with it? Did the victim fail to appear but decided to seek revenge on Saldivar? Possible…And this demonstrates the type of additional information you can find through public records that can make one story have many scenarios.
I waited a day to see if additional information was reported, and NBC24 has this updated story that reports that it’s believed the original home invasion was felt to be drug related and:
Officers recovered a partially-opened duffel bag, inside the vehicle parked in front of the home, which contained marijuana. The vehicle was impounded by police.
A search warrant executed Tuesday revealed twenty pounds of marijuana with a street value of $30,000 inside the bag. The vehicle belonged to one of the occupants inside the Blackstone St. home.
It doesn’t appear that my “revenge” theory was correct, at least at this point, but we do know that it was not quite the same scenario as an innocent homeowner being the victim of an armed invasion.
hey the article on the net says tirrell villolovos was shot, which one is it , the home owner salvidar or villolovos, where was they fleeing to, if he is the homeowner?
November 26th, 2009 at 9:35 pmtheyre are two articles, one where villolovos was shot and salivdar was shot, which one is it, the news said villolovos
November 26th, 2009 at 9:42 pmVincent Saldivar was reported as shot that night, he is not the homeowner, then it was later reported that Tirrell Villolovos was shot. So, it’s not clear if they were both shot or if the first report as to Vincent being shot was wrong.
November 26th, 2009 at 9:43 pmThe Blade also reported Vincent being shot, but neither Vincent or Tirrell are the homeowner, the home appears to be a rental unit.
November 26th, 2009 at 9:45 pmso why the inconsistency of the story, 24 said villolovos and then the blade saying saldivar.were they both shot?clearly they are not the homeowner, so saldivar is the rentee, why did they shot them and leave the others inside, were they the only ones that run?the suv with marijuana belonging to someone in the house, there were 5 people. Why the inconsistency in WHO got shot?why not just say both.
November 27th, 2009 at 10:45 amI wish I could answer that one for you, all I know is that neither man was the homeowner and they first reported one was shot then the other. I can’t find any other reports on the second report. Neither man has been charged in relation to the drugs that were found as far as the public records available through the Court either.
24 and the Blade first reported Saldivar, then 24 updated with Villolovos. It was reported five were in the house and that two fled in the second story, the first one was less details. It all comes down to what the police release on the story, sometimes more is known later but normally they don’t get the names wrong, which suggests, both men were injured, but the second report from 24 only focused on the additional information that was learned.
November 27th, 2009 at 10:57 amLisa, chances are, in most Toledo areas, gunmen bursting into a home is related to a drug deal.
