Penn National to meet with Rossford Public School Board members…

15 Nov 2009

Shortly after the election, Rossford Public School board member, Jackie Brown, stated she wanted to sit down and discuss the concerns of having a casino within walking distance of schools…It appears that is going to happen. In speaking with Jackie Brown yesterday, a meeting has been planned with members of the Rossford Public School board, administration and at least one Rossford City Council person for the week of December 7th. More information as to the meeting, including if it will be open to the public will be forthcoming.

This is an oxymoron on Miss Brown’s part, anything north of the Pilkington Plant is not walkable let alone where the casino will be. I find this pointless since Rossford and the school district is not part of where casino will be so ultimately it should be a concern to Toledo and TPS if we’re going to talk logic here.

If I was a casino owner, I’d be concerned about students coming from Rossford who may vandalize the property because they are bored and have nothing better to do, same goes for TPS teens.

It’s about a mile from the nearest school, and a little over a mile to the next school according to google maps. It is a concern to Rossford Schools and the City of Rossford since the reality is the casino is in Rossford. Rossford city services will have to be provided and Rossford City Schools does not overly benefit from the current scenario compared to Toledo or TPS.

There was concern expressed about a variety of issues that would impact Rossford, so Penn National Gaming meeting with them should be looked upon as a positive.

I have never understood why they don’t build the casino downtown Toledo, where everything would be centrally located hotels, portside, arena and ballpark. Won’t people have to commute via I 75 to get to downtown where the happenings should be.Am I the only one who feels that way.

    Why are we so backwards??

We didn’t have a say as a community where the casino was going to be built. That was decided by Penn National, some have felt the way you do that it should be downtown. Others expressed areas such as NorthTowne or Southwyck would also be good locations where there was also land available.

    Casino

Ok, I have heard that too, I wonder how they will handle the transportation for the people from out of town that may want to visit other sites in the city.We don’t want them drinking and driving. Maybr now Rossford will build hotels etc. Competion for downtown?!
Why did we vote for something that we have no control over, and how much was spent on advertising, I heard something about $32 million.

I am not in favor of the casino, but on the other hand why does every thing hsve to be downtown? I don’t know personally anyone who goes downtown for anything.

toledo can not run roughshod over rossford – there frankly should be some revenue sharing. on the other hand rossford already has one of nw ohio’s most profitable speed traps there through downtown rossford and this casino is sure to have a multiplier affect. they will writing soooo many tickets that they will be able to afford additional city services… but they will also need them because of the safety concerns and wear and tear the casino will bring.

we put our constitution up for sale and penn national won – why we don’t have a say as to where the casino’s go is simple – our state legislators should have seen the writing on the wall and passed legislation to legalize and CONTROL the gambling themselves. leave it to big money and you wind up with monopolies and no local controls.

the casino is not going to want to share the profits by having existing restaurants and hotels benefit – they will build the hotel rooms they need and control those dollars as well. they will be nearly giving away food thus actually hurting area restaurants.

    Gerald,

There are plenty of people that go downtown!

Trust me, as a downtown resident, we average about 5-6 K for hockey games, the circus this weekend had a great draw and don’t even get me started on the hordes that invade during baseball season…it’s great to see!!

The only downside to downtown living is everyone seems to have to park in my parking garage!

My suggestion is come on down and check it out for yourself…the events are plentyful and reasonably priced, the food at most of the downtown establishments is tasty and the beer is always cold!

    Enjoy!

Again, this casino issue was all BS from the start.

How is it just, moral, or right, that people on the other side of the state where involved in deciding where the a proposed casino in Toledo was going to go?

That is a decision best left to the people most effected by it, which are the the people of each city and more importantly those who’s backyard its going to be in.

This was wrong from the beginning and I foresee nothing but continued problems going forward.

We should be ashamed of ourselves as a state. We let desperation and greed for tax dollars overcome our logic.

I was and still am in favor of casino gambling for Toledo. I was and still am opposed to the constitutional amendment as it was passed. Now, we’re stuck with it.

Zimmy in #7 is right! Legalized gambling was going to happen in Ohio. Our state legislators should have written legislation to legalize gambling the right way! Now, we’re stuck with a monopoly that will build a facility in a very poor location and hurt many current local business owners. We’re being sold down the (Maumee) river! Big money wins again!!

dalepertcheck: You’re right, big money won because of the cowardice of the legislature. But don’t forget that it was the ignorance/greed of the people that ultimately passed the issue.

I see it from both points of view on location..but agree that the 75/Miami st location is going to be the most profitable for our city. It’s highly visible location and let’s face it…people passing through the area are more likely to see it on the edge of 75 than downtown.
