Strickland orders all state flags at half-staff until sunset Tuesday – Finkbeiner till Wednesday

Governor Orders Flags Lowered to Half Staff in Honor of Victims at Fort Hood
Columbus, Ohio – Ohio Governor Ted Strickland today ordered all state flags at public buildings and grounds to be flown at half-staff until sunset on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 in honor of the victims of the Fort Hood tragedy.
The text of the governor’s order follows:
Ohio grieves for the victims of the tragedy at Fort Hood. The prayers of our people seek comfort for the families of those who were lost, recovery for those who were injured, and solace for all whose lives were affected by this senseless violence.
In sympathy for the victims of this tragic act and in respect for those who put their lives on the line every day to protect our safety, by the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Ohio, in coordination with the order of President Barack Obama, I hereby order that the flags of the United States of America and the State of Ohio shall be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout the State of Ohio upon receipt of this notice until sunset on Tuesday, November 10, 2009.

Flags to be flown at half-staff
Today, Mayor Carty Finkbeiner respectfully asked all flags to be flown at half-staff through Veterans Day, November 11th, as a tribute to those who lost their lives in the mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.

November 6th, 2009 at 4:10 pmUnfortunately, for Carty, he has no authority to instruct that flags be flown at half-staff. Only the President and governor of a state have that authority.
Additionally, flag etiquette dictates that flags be flown at full staff on Veteran’s Day, which is probably why Gov. Strickland worded his order the way he did.
Please fly your flags at full staff on Veteran’s Day.
