Wilkowski High Speed Rail Plan Gains Support Of Locomotive Union
Democratic mayoral candidate vows to turns his late father’s vision into a reality
Toledo, OH – Tomorrow, Friday, October 30, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers Union will announce their support for Democratic mayoral candidate Keith Wilkowski’s plan to ensure that Toledo is a key hub in the new Ohio transportation system. Wilkowski will make the announcement at a news conference at 10 a.m. at the Toledo AmtrakTrain Station, 415 Emerald Ave.
Wilkowski’s late father, Art Wilkowski, served in the Ohio General Assembly from 1969-1983. For years, he lobbied almost single-handedly to bring high speed passenger rail service to the state. Wilkowski is vowing to pick up the mantle and to complete his father’s mission.

WHAT: Announce Locomotive Engineers Union support of Wilkowski’s plan to promote high-speed passenger trains and create thousands of jobs for our city and region
WHERE: In front of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza (Amtrak station), 415 Emerald Ave. (Rain Site: inside the main lobby)
WHEN: Tomorrow – October 30, 2009, 10:00 a.m.
“I was in my early teens when my father became convinced that Ohio’s future lay with the economic advantages of high speed passenger rail service,” said Wilkowski. “That was 30 years ago. As Mayor, I’ll make high-speed rail a part of our economic development strategy and work to put new jobs on the fast track.”
Wilkowski’s plan calls for Toledo to be key hub in the new Ohio Hub transportation system on both an east-west and a north-south axis. This bold proposal comes at a time when momentum is building for new high-speed passenger train service. The federal government has appropriated $8 billion in stimulus funds to be allocated to federally-designated high-speed rail corridors such as the Chicago-Toledo-Cleveland corridor.
