Kroger had announced closing of another Ohio store earlier…

18 Oct 2009

Around the same time frame that it was being reported that Kroger was planning on closing the Manhattan location here in Toledo, Kroger had announced it was closing a store in Delaware, Ohio. Some residents there have expressed interest in the store staying open, and incentives are being considered according to NBC4 in Delaware.

It’s a similar scenario, an older store that is not profitable, that even some area residents have openly stated they prefer the newer Kroger locations. The transportation aspect has been raised, but in this case it does not appear Kroger has made the same offer in Delaware that they did here as far as providing transportation. Since yesterday was the first day the shuttle service was offered, I was kind of surprised that there was no media coverage on it as far as how many people used the shuttle service. It would be interesting to discover how many people took advantage of it.

So, boycott Kroger, how many other chains are in the urban core? Are you going to boycott all of those who don’t have stores in the urban core? If so, then your choices of where you shop will be fairly limited. I’m not going to boycott Kroger based on their actions, then again I shop at other grocery stores too, based on prices.

I also realize the truth behind why Kroger closed and they were not willing to invest money to remodel or build a new store in an area where they didn’t make a profit. No business would, it’s not logical. You don’t invest in an area where it’s been demonstrated there is no profit and where you know that there is such a small base of customer support for that one location.

Roland makes me laugh. I think he would be pleased if obama would nationalize kroger and make them put a free soup kitchen in toledo. Kroger is dangerous, wrong thinking, and the worst of all, wants to make money. Ahhh, that is the way a progressive thinks.

Did you notice what Roland said in his blog? He said. “I have decided that people in Toledo, Ohio should boycott Kroger.” Roland knows what is best for us, because we are all, just stupid.

We will all be better off if we just let the progressives tell us what to do.

Aren’t they great, the progressives, I mean! We are all stupid, and only people like he, know what is right for us.

I read Roland’s blog. We’ll never get a Sprouts, Trader Joes, or Whole Foods, or Giant Eagle in Toledo, even if every Kroger closed tomorrow. Those places simply won’t set up shop in zip codes with such low average household incomes. Food Town could expand a bit, like they have done on Central near Douglas, but what will more realistically happen, unfortunately, is that some second or third tier grocery store, like the one at Bancroft and Cherry and Monroe/Detroit, will go in on Manhattan once Kroger leaves. You’ve got to wonder how much time is left for the Monroe/Secor Kroger, especially given the new competition for the bigger dollars from the nearby Fresh Market and Costco and the continued presence of Churchill’s and Schoerling’s …

You got that right sujay, or maybe a couple of convenience stores will take up the slack.

I am shocked that roland would promote a non “Progressive” organization like Whole Foods. Maybe it was a typo.

Not Again has once again demonstrated that good ol’ flaming remains here on GCJ. Such a shame!

Interesting response, LisaRenee. Thanks for sharing your perspective.

Perhaps if you actually wanted to add to the discussion rather than just linking it would have generated discussion. The real shame is that there were other comments besides Not Again’s if you were truly interested in discussion. Sujay’s as an example…

Not Again is correct that you did state you had decided the people of Toledo should boycott Kroger. None of us have that kind of power.

Thanks, Lisa. I could have sworn I remembered a time when you asked me to provide links to your blogs on mine and a time when you told me that I was welcome to place links to my blogs on yours. I also could have sworn that I remembered you had stated several times that you would not allow personal attacks against individuals. Apparently, my memory must be flawed. I apologize for inconveniencing you.

Roland, if you don’t want to discuss things here, that’s fine, you don’t participate here anymore because you don’t like the fact that I allow people to post without using their real names. I don’t allow insults that go beyond a certain level, had Not Again crossed that line I would have addressed it, and he was correct that your initial line was one that appeared a bit authoritative.

That said, there is a difference between actually wanting to discuss something and a drive by comment. If you want to use my blog as a drive by? That’s fine but there were those who responded to you that you could have decided to engage in discussion with. Or, you could decide to focus on something else, which you did.

The advice given in the past as far as building blog traffic was to participate and then share something like, “I’ve gone into this in more detail on my blog” — or “I wrote a similar post the other day” it’s the basic advice I give anyone who asks me. I’ve never suggested to just drop links with no discussion, on many blogs that gets deleted.

And, since we have gone off topic, some Blog Etiquette rules from 2007 that could apply to many…

Here’s a more recent one, on blogging basics that covers the discussion/debate on when to link and how, that is a bit closer to my feeling on the matter, emphasis is mine.

    4. Don’t sell yourself in comments. Bloggers have differing opinions about whether it’s OK to link to your own blog in the comments at another blog. Some think it’s a bit like poaching traffic or promoting yourself in an inappropriate place (after all, this is someone’s personal blog space). Others think it’s OK to leave a permalink if you’ve written something extremely relevant. Just linking to yourself for the sake of having your link out there is a definite no-no.

Most platforms ask you to enter your name, e-mail, and URL before you leave a comment and then, when your comment is posted, readers can click on your name and be taken to your blog. Putting your URL in the comment itself is redundant.

If you’re reading a post and you’ve written something similar you can go two ways:

    * Give an overview of your thoughts/post, then let readers know you’ve said much more on the subject and invite them to read your post by listing a permalink to that article.
    * Give an overview of your thoughts and leave it at that.

Thank you very much, Lisa Renee, for the blog etiquette and blogging basics links and information. As you know, I love to learn, and I know I can learn more with each and every passing day.
As always, your assistance is appreciated. I can learn a lot from you. Your knowledge and expertise are so extensive, it is awe inspiring. It is no wonder you are sought out by the blogosphere, newspapers, radio, and television. You have become quite the celebrity.
    Once again, thanks.

I’m just me Roland, and any celebritiness (yes I know that is not a word) is because of those who comment and read.

I’m sorry you don’t participate anymore, but I still wish you well.
