Transitioning to glasscityjungle.com

26 Jul 2010

As some of you have noticed, I’ve started revamping Glass City Jungle at the main url for the domain – glasscityjungle.com. It’s a different look and a style of theme – it’s a magazine/news theme which may take some getting used to for some of you.

The concept behind it is to create a scenario where what topics interest you most are on the front page, and days where there are lots of media releases the other content of the blog is not pushed down the page. There are still things to add, like links to blogs – they’ll be located on the page of the actual posts you read and comment on and some other features.

The good news is the comment preview window is available in Wordpress3.0 – the bad news is there is not yet a comment editing program that’s been approved for Wordpress3.0. Subscribe to comments is available for those of you who use that. You may have to wait for your first comment to be approved over there, but I hope you check it out and help me put the new template through it’s paces before everything is done.

It should be much faster and the server issues we’ve faced should not exist there.

    Lisa,

So if I understand, there will still be a section like this at the new site where you will list topics and people can post in the same way. I don’t know what I would do with out my daily dose from Sensor G, History Mike,MICHAEL FREIDMAN, ThisJustin, and all the other folks whose views I have come to look forward to.

Bob, everyone will still be able to comment so you’ll be able to follow everyone as you do now. The only difference is the front page of the blog and you won’t use the /wordpress at the end of the domain name.

Now, new posts push the old posts off the page and they are not arranged by category. On a magazine style theme, there is a block of space for each category and then the most recent posts within that category show. When you click on a post title on the new theme – it’s the same thing as here when you click on the “read more” or the link to comment. You also can click on the category title and see all the posts for that category.

The most recent comments made on all threads is still shared so you can still track comments.

I might be extra thick in the head today, but I’ll ask anyway.

Are you going to keep up both versions?

    LisaRenee Says:

This version will still be live but only for archival purposes once the discussion on the posts here dies down. All new material is now being posted on the other site.

Normally I would just copy all of the posts and comments from here to the new site. Unfortunately this weekend it became clear there’s some type of a database glitch with this site that will not allow me to copy the past two years of posts/comments. Which is why the only option to be able to upgrade the way I needed to, for Wordpress and for advanced hosting options was to basically start over on the glasscityjungle.com url.
