Only 103 days until the big midterm elections. In Ohio, it looks like Kasich and Portman have slight edges as of now. I don’t think any polling is out on OH-9, but I think Marcy will likely win with a comfortable margin. Any thoughts on Ohio or the national scene with the election quickly approaching?

  2. Dave:

I don’t usually get worked up over murders in Toledo but my initial reaction was to give the death penalty to Bucher’s killer…I still think that. Since he confessed, the news medis ahouldn’t label him “alleged”…they should call him “the killer” or something like that.

  3. Jackie:

As in independent voter I am totally uncommitted at this time. I may not be happy with the present administration in our state but I remember who brought us to this party. I am not willing to give them a second chance to ruin again our state. So I will have to wait till someone sells me their story and I believe them.

I’m sorry Dave I do not believe in the death penalty. If it is wrong to kill it is wrong to kill. I realize I am not where most of the people are but I have felt this way for decades.

  4. MARTY BAGS:

Kasich will lose to Strickland, if his being so out of touch with NW Ohio is any indication of how he is treating cities outside of Columbus, he will not get any support.

    http://www.toledoblade.com/article/20100722/NEWS09/307229984
Going to NW Ohio and saying ‘we need to get that woman a job’ then telling Jim Seney about how you support building intermodal rail between Columbus and the Ohio River shows a total loss of touch with our community. What is the woman looking for a job supposed to do? Move to Columbus and get a job laying track?

Kaptur vs. Iott? If Iott gets 29% of the vote, it could be considered a WIN.

I give Sarantou an even money chance for County Comissioner, and will be pulling for him.

  5. Patrick W:

I think Kasich and Strickland will be very close. I am pulling for Kasich, but I could see Strickland winning. I think Iott will do better than 29%, but will not win. I think he will get between 35 and 40 percent. The earmark thing could hurt Marcy, and he has money to exploit it. Portman and Fisher seem to be very close. Probably too close to call, but polls have Portman up very slightly. Nationally, all signs are leading to significant Republican gains, including a few house seats in Ohio.

  6. MARTY BAGS:

Patrick, The whole ‘earmark’ thing is nothing but a PR stunt. Please tell me a single district in this country that doesn’t want their representatives to help bring money back to their constituents. As long as there are rules, the wealthy and well connected will find loopholes to exempt themselves from them. There is an entire industry called ‘accounting’ devoted to this very purpose.

  7. Patrick W:

I understand, Marty. I was just trying to say that Iott is certain to try to gain some political points on the connections between the earmarks and that company that provided campaign contributions. I don’t know if there is any substance to the story, but I think that the issue will be exploited. In a very anti-Washington year, I think he can get 35-40%. I still think that Marcy will stay in office. I am interested in governors races across America. Redistricting takes place next year as a result of the census. Real Clear Politics currently estimates that there will be 35 Republican governors, 14 Democrats, and 1 Independent. 35 governors of any 1 party sounds like a lot. I am not sure how often that has happened before. We’ll see how it all turns out.

  8. MICHAEL L. FRIEDMAN:

THE TEA BAG MOVEMENT IS GOING TO HURT ANY CHANCE OF REPUBLICAN GAINS IN EITHER THE HOUSE OR SENATE. CONWAY WILL WIN IN KENTUCKY AND REID WILL TAKE NEVADA, BOXER WILL WIN IN CALIFORNIA CRIST WILL WIN IN FLORIDA AND TURN DEMOCRATIC

  9. SensorG:

Does anyone know where I can get a Marcy sign? I didn’t see any place on her web site.

    thanks -SG

  10. MARTY BAGS:

    Sensor, I want one too!

–Patrick: These days the issue that is bigger than the war (which did NOT end once Obama took office) is jobs.

Iott LOST jobs via Foodtowns closing, without even being in office. Anything that shows Kaptur bringing money into the region will help. Kaptur giving money to people in this region, even if some of it is kicked back to her campaign, is a true example of Trickle Down Economics.

If you want to really research where money goes, look to see how much money your precinct captains, and council people spend online vs. Brick & Mortar stores in their districts. I know this is not out there yet, but with all of the cries of ‘responsibility’ it soon may be.

  11. SensorG:

What strikes me that Iott (and may other Republicans running for office) are promising to never bring a federal dollar (‘no big checks’) back to our district. How does this help us?

  12. Doug:

“Kaptur giving money to people in this region, even if some of it is kicked back to her campaign, is a true example of Trickle Down Economics.”

No. It is redistribution not TDE. TDE is when you don’t tax the hell out of the money makers and allow the money makers to spend thier money on products and services, things that have value to the person the money comes from. What you are describing is theft, the taking of money to give to someone else with no compensation or choice to the giver. Don’t try to spin this in any other way than what it is. Evil.

  13. Doug:

    SensorG,
It’s called doing the right thing even if it is unpopular. Integrity used to be a quality we looked for in a leader and I hope we will again. Supporting someone for the chance that you might get some bread crumbs at the end of the day seems shallow and dishonest. I would like to see someone actually try help build us up that we wouldn’t need money from other places brought into here and that we would be fighting to keep our money instead of happy that we have a good begger.

  14. Patrick W:

I think we all agree that Iott is not going to win. Jobs are the main issue, which I think we can all agree on as well. He has the money to get a message out. Whether anyone buys his message is another story. Most of Marcy’s opponents have been total no-names with no money. Even with the earmarks the Toledo area lags way behind most of the country in economic development. I am certainly not saying Iott could fix all of this, but something somewhere needs to change. I think that whoever the next governor is will have a greater influence on the Toledo economy that whoever the next representative is. We already know what the economy in Toledo under Strickland is like. I think Kasich would do better.

  15. MICHAEL L. FRIEDMAN:

SENSORG….YOU CAN GET MARCY SIGNS AS MANY AS YOU WANT FROM DEMOCRATIC PARTY HEADQUARTERS…1817 MADSON AVE….CALL BEFORE YOU GO DOWNTOWN..419-246-9301.. THE HAVE ALOT OF SIGNS AND PLEASE TAKE ONE FOR HARRY BARLOS, IF YOU LIVE IN HIS DISTRICT..

    THANKS

  16. Patrick W:

Lower federal taxs so money stays at the local level in the first place would be much better than hoping that your representative can get their hands on some pork. If there is substance to the earmark story and Marcy was getting pork in order to get campaign contributions then every honest person in her district should vote agains her. It is immoral and obviously isn’t helping NW Ohio much, considering the unemployment rate. If there is no substance to the story, then hopefully Iott will be honest and leave it alone.

  17. stinger82:

    Well said Patrick and Doug.

I like Marcy however she really upset me when she ducked public discourse on the health care issue. I thought that the importance of that issue would have been evident to her and that she would have made herself more available to the public. When she spent the time and effort to make the trip to Poland yet didn’t make time for public debate she really soured me.

  18. SensorG:

So how does Iott do that? In the mean time every other congressman (including Bob Latta) are getting earmarks for businesses and infrastructure in their districts to create and lure jobs, while Iott would take a hands off approach to our district?

Republicans have been some of the biggest offenders of the earmark system. If anything I fault Marcy for not bring more back into the district.

  19. SensorG:

People keep beating the “taxes are too high drum”, but Federal taxes are at a near 50 year low AND while we’re at it, unionization is at a near 50 year low (1/3 of what it was in 1945).

These are the two things that conservatives keep griping about, but they are both a fraction of that they were in the 40s, 50s or 60’s. Shouldn’t the economy be at its 50 year best?

  20. Doug:

    SensorG,
I’m not sure if your responding to what I wrote or Patrick but I have no idea if Iott would do what he says he will. His handling of Foodtown isn’t exactly what I consider qualifications of a good candidate. Republicans and/or Democrats both need to start becoming a solution to the problem and not another cog in the wheel. I think it is a sad and depressing mentality to believe that a good representative is one that can take the most money. Sorry if I can’t join you and put on the golden chains of a welfare society, I plan to oppose it in any way I can. I’m tired of shaking hands with the devil and wondering why I keep getting burned.

  21. SensorG:

I don’t think the government investing infrastructure, research or education is welfare.

  22. Patrick W:

Calling runaway defecit spending “investing” is dishonest at best. Tack interest onto the amount borrowed from China and the debt is even bigger. Unfortunately, there are some major offenders on my side of the aisle. Ted Stevens and Thad Cochran are two of the worst. Two wrongs don’t make a right. John Mccain has never accepted 1 earmark. For as much as I think he falls short of being a true conservative, he is exactly right on this issue. Earmarks clearly haven’t worked for Toledo. 12% or more unemployment.

  23. SensorG:

First thing, earmarks average around $20 billion per year. A drop in the bucket compared to the federal deficit. The bulk to today’s federal debt, verses the surplus projected under Clinton are the result of Bush era tax cuts and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Add to that less tax revenue because of the recession and you have your deficit.

  24. The Asshole Lawyer:

    Crime and murder up.

    Jobs and economic development down.

And yet the City Counsel is busy debating the passage of a non-binding, irrellevant, ineffective “resolution” for comprehensive national immigration reform. Form over substance, and a waste of time. Time = money.

Thank you Mr. Mayor for voting NO. Counsel get to work on issues you can effect.

    TAHL

  25. Doug:

    SensorG,
Infrastructure is good investment but I don’t hear much of anyone investing in infrastructure, it’s all about job creation lately. Research is questionable as by taxing companies, government is stealing private research money. Education is not welfare, I agree.

  26. Mariner:

100% agree with post #22. As far as earmarks and pork into NW Ohio, our current Representative was dealing with mostly Republican Presidents who didn’t seem to have a lot of interest investing in a Democratic, largely union area. For the eight years of a Democratic President, (Clinton) our Representative choose to argue and condemn, (ie: Nafta and Monica)so that once again NW Ohio came out short. If this has been intelligent representation, then the losers perspective continues…

  27. SensorG:

“Infrastructure is good investment but I don’t hear much of anyone investing in infrastructure,”

Kind of the point of the “Stimulus” passed last year. Several roads around here were upgraded. It should have been twice as large as it was. Toledo could use a new sewer system and Point Place could use a new levy. Both great infrastructure projects that could people to work and modernize Toledo’s infrastructure.

I’m always amazed at Roosevelt’s public works projects when I visit the Toledo zoo or go camp Miakonda and see everything that got built during the depression.

  28. Patrick W:

    Sensor,
Discretionary spending is up over 80% under Obama. He will surpass the total debt of the Bush years this year or next. It really isn’t hard to figure out why debt is bad. Earmarks may be a small piece of the puzzle, but we have to start somewhere. Let’s not forget that Marcy voted for Cap and trade, which would destroy what’s left of Toledo. Not to mention, shuffling money around does not improve the environment. She deserves to lose based on merit, but she will likely win.

  29. Patrick W:

    Sensor,
#27 is the dumbest thing I have ever seen you post. It should have been twice as large? You have to be smarter than that. There have been 3 million jobs lost since the passage of the stimulus. More spending=more job loss. If it was twice as large that number would likely have been 5 or 6 million. The stimulus is a total failure. The government must take out of the economy in order to put into it. That is why large government spending has never worked. All it does is create huge debt and market dislocations. Very easy stuff to understand.

  30. LisaRenee:

On discretionary spending – Politifact and if you want to take the time to delve into historical numbers…the White House.

  31. Doug:

“The government must take out of the economy in order to put into it.”

    Great line, pure truth.

  32. Patrick W:

Thanks for the links, Lisa. I believe discretionary spending has gone up since the January Politifact article. Increasing spending while tax receipts are way down is only something an economic illiterate like Obama would do. Ireland was just downgraded by Moody’s last week. We are on our way if nothing changes.

  33. Patrick W:

Marcy has supported all this madness! Health care, cap and trade, the failed stimulus…etc. Burying children in $40,000 debt the minute they are born is not compassionate. Our unfunded liabilities are approximately $100,000,000,000,000. $100 Trillion is an incomprehensible amount of money. We do not live in a fantasy world where we can spend as much as we want. The laws of economics do apply to us.

  34. SensorG:

“The government must take out of the economy in order to put into it.”

    - not technically true – it’s debt driving the spending, not new taxes.

Hate to burst your bubble, but it’s not new spending that is driving the deficit. It’s two wars, the Bush’s tax cuts and decrease intake of tax dollars due to the recession.

    http://tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/06/chart-of-the-day-reminder-the-deficit-youre-freaking-out-about-is-bushs-fault.php

BTW – I’d take “fiscal conservatives” more seriously if talked about cutting military spending or if they came up with some plan on how to actually pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Has there ever been a time in American history that we fought a war (two wars no less) and lowered taxes?

Republicans want extend Bush’s tax cuts, but have no way of paying for it. They hold off extending unemployment insurance because they demand that the $20 billion be offset by cuts somewhere else, but won’t say how they will offset over $3 trillion the tax cuts will cost over the next 10 years.

  35. Patrick W:

    Sensor,
Tax cuts increase revenue. They only take away from revenue for a very short period of time. Reagan nearly doubled revenue to the federal gov in the 80’s and slashed the upper marginal rate from 70% to 28%, later bumping back up to 32%. Debt also takes away from the economy by weakening the dollar and driving up interest rates. Interest rates are being held artificially low right now and the dollar is being propped up by the weak Euro. There will be a day of reckoning, and it will be very ugly. I guess Marcy might not understand all of this since she has either been a college student or a bureaucrat her entire adult life. I am a fiscal conservative and openly support closing military bases in places like Germany, Denmark, and many other places to bring down the defense budget. The rate of increase of the military budget must also be addressed.

  36. Jackie:

It is a fact that when President Clinton left office this country had a surplus. Eight years later we had a huge deficit, 2 wars not funded, and a recession. This was under President Bush and for 6 years a republican congress.

Add to that the almost complete failure of the auto industry and related businesses, the housing bubble burst and we are in the midst of the biggest recession I have ever known. But for the social network for our society I truly believe it would be a depression.

It was the auto industry failures that has led to Toledo unemployment losses and I think the true unemployment figure is higher than 12%. Any time you put all your eggs in one basket failure is sure to follow.

This country for 2 years had needed a “jobs” program. Without jobs that pay wages that a family can live on we will never recover. Whether that takes tax cuts or deficit spending – I don’t care. Just get our people working again and our economy will improve.

  37. SensorG:

    Couple of things –

Reagan also gave us one of the largest tax increases as well.

And federal revenues rose 80 percent in dollars from 1980 to 1988. Once corrected for inflation and population growth, both of which tend to make revenues grow regardless of tax policy, real revenues per capita grew only 19 percent over the same period.

It grew at at 41% under Clinton.

Again taxes and union membership are at a 50 year low…why isn’t the economy at it’s 50 year high? Why isn’t federal tax revenue at a 50 year high?

Like it or not even Republicans admit extending the Bush tax cuts will cost $3-4 over the next decade.

  38. TheAssholeLawyer:

    Sensor:

What is your source for the claim that taxes are at a 50 year low?

Tax cuts don’t COST anything. A cut in taxes, despite what the President claims, do not need to be funded.

A tax cut allows citizens – including corporate citizens – to keep more of their money. That money is in turn invested into the economy, which increases overall federal tax revenue. This fact has been proven by history, time and time again.

An across the board tax cut is the best way to stimulate the economy, at any level.

Maybe you think it’s lame Lisa, but I speak fact. Ask anybody who worked with Friedman at the 180th about the blowjobs he’d get in his office. And how he loved sharing his wife with others. The guy’s in no position to judge.

    A) that has no bearing on my blog or me – B) if that’s really true than you or some of your friends who would supposedly confirm this should have brought it up when he ran the first time or the last time – C) I’m fond of my husband so swingers don’t appeal to me. Assuming that I agree with his comments is a stretch, he posts the things he does at his own peril and if you were interested in actually contributing to the discussion….you’d be participating at that level. I’m not protecting him in some special manner, if you wrote some of the things you did about anyone I’d not post them.

  40. Patrick W:

    Jackie,
you are right on about the auto industry. Let’s take the next step and look at why the auto industry failed. The UAW insists on outrageous legacy costs that no competetive business can afford. This drives up the cost of American made vehicles while driving down quality. Add this to ridiculous workplace rules like forklifts not being able to cross certain lines and other stupid policies and we see the result. Addtionally, being on a wage scale rather than everyone’s performance being evaluated individually reduces incentive and brings everyone down to a lowest common denominator. If we want to compete with India and China then unions must either be put in check or go extinct. Sensor- Can you name the Republican policy that brought the housing and banking industries to their knees? I can tell you that the community reinvestment act and fannie mae are largely responsible for this. Both of which were started by Democrats. Here is a link to a 2003 NYT article about how Bush was trying to reform Fannie and Freddie. Chris Dodd and Barney Frank never allowed this to happen. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/11/business/new-agency-proposed-to-oversee-freddie-mac-and-fannie-mae.html?sec=&spon=&pagewanted=print

  41. SensorG:

    TAHL –
    “Tax cuts don’t COST anything.”

Cutting taxes is deficit spending too. If not, then cut everyone’s taxes to 1% and government coffers would be over flowing right? Heck the wars would pay for themselves.

    Top marginal rates -

    http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/taxfacts/displayafact.cfm?Docid=161

Depending on your tax mix between capital gains and income during the late 80’s (88-89) you might have paid a couple of less bucks in taxes.
I stand by might assertion that taxes are at a 50 year low. Union membership is at a near 50 year low as well, again – why isn’t the economy humming?

Patrick – who controlled congress in 2003?

  42. Jackie:

    “Tax cuts don’t COST anything.”

Tax cuts cost the same as program increases. They affect the bottom line.

There are easy fixes to most of the state, city and country’s financial problems, i.e. raise the amount SS is paid on, raise some taxes a small amount, cut programs across the board 3%, etc. The problem is fixed financially easily. It is the political risk no one is willing to take.

It is a known fact, and I’ll check where to find this, that taxes are at a 50 year low and the numbers tell you about union membership. When I went to work in the 50’s the highest tax rate was 90%. Yep, that is right 90%. And we still had a wealthy class in this country.

  43. TAHL:

I was not arguing that Sensor G is wrong about the tax rate, I am curious about the source.

PLEASE, don’t cite me a blog. If that was effective I could cite my own blog.

  44. Patrick W:

    Sensor,
Do you know what the Laffer Curve is? If so, then you would know that no one supports a 0% tax. Both a 0% tax and a 100% tax produce 0 revenue. The Laffer curve helps determine the balance of taxes and revenue. There is an upper tax rate limit that anything beyond it stunts growth and reduces revenue. There is also a lower limit where if taxes are cut below it, then it harms revenue. There is more analysis that goes into it, but that is the framework. Mr. Laffer currently has a propsal for an 11.5% flat tax that would produce more revenue than is currently produced. Jackie, I agree that the answers are not so complicated. We may not agree on how to get there, but the process should be simple. Normal citizens like us don’t have interest groups to answer to. That is why politicians always claim that problems are so complex. They have a lot of contributors to keep happy

  45. Patrick W:

Did anyone read the NYT link that I posted? You will never hear Keith Olberman or any other libs on MSNBC or the networks talk about how Bush fought to regulate Fannie and Freddie. He knew a major problem was bubbling. I think history will be more kind to Bush than the media was during his presidency.

  46. SensorG:

I posted two links from the combined work of the Urban Institute and the Brooking institute. They’re just reporting numbers, no spin.

  47. Jackie:

    Patrick W 43

I agree with your. As someone who worked in finance their entire business life I know the financial fixes are easy. It is the political risks no one is willing to take.

We should be able to sit down at the table and come to a conclusion that would be the best for our country, city, or state. It may not be easy but it has to be done if we are going to survive and prosper.

  48. Jackie:

    Patrick W 43

You do not need a blue ribbon panel to study this. Just bring in some citizen with business knowledge who really care about our government. Dream on…….

  49. MARTY BAGS:

Not going to comment on every jot and tittle, but #33 was about where I got motivated to post again.

“Burying children in $40,000 debt the minute they are born is not compassionate.”

That has NOTHING to do with Marcy Kaptur and is a lie made by the Tea Partiers…

Using that same logic, when Clinton left office, and there was a surplus, I didn’t see anyone running out to announce that because of Marcy Kaptur our children would be born with a few pence in their pockets.

How did we get in this mess? We invaded Iraq becasue we could not find Osama Bin Laden and needed to do something to shore up morale.

In 10 years Iraq and Afghanistan will likely be nicer than here, that’s where all of our money is going.

  50. DBforever:

Look around…what has Kaptur done for you after 28 years?!! It’s worse! Toledo keeps getting what it votes for. We deserve better. Look at all of the new solor panel companies..notice where they are located— WOOD COUNTY!! Wake up. You are getting what you voted for for 28 years…a big bunch of nothing …and even with these so called earmarks..I think the jokes on you.

Kaptur should not be playing favorites with her contributors. She’s supposed to be looking out for the best interests of ALL of her constituents – and their pocketbooks. It is time for ALL of Washington to quit picking the winners and the losers in our economy.

    Google “Iott + earmarks”…good reading.

  51. DBforever:

Congress has an astounding 11% job approval rating. Remember the Ted Kennedy seat…I say anything is possible in this climate—even OH9. BTW…there is much on the internet for those who want to attempt to comprehend and understand how we’ve been had.

    It’s just finally catching up.

Marty let’s not forget the Hussein boys especially those delightful offspring: Uday and Qusay. They had vowed revenge against our Bush family and without intervention that pursuit would have gone on for years. Messy business, but necessary so as not to need to deal with it later. Afghan was a major grower of poppy and reflects the continued war against drugs. It’s a pity none of those strategies have been successful thus far.

  53. LisaRenee:

DB – the University of Toledo and many of the solar projects at their incubator are not in Wood County…not to mention the fact that Kaptur has done a lot for our community in the past 28 years and will continue to do so. I’ve not yet seen any credible reason to even consider replacing her with a freshman Republican.

  54. Jackie:

I have a question. Who are the 11% who approve of Congress?

  55. LisaRenee:

Maybe Congress members or their relatives Jackie

  56. DBforever:

Lisa…Anxiously Look forward to reading that list of things Kaptur has done for us in her 28 years. I see no credible reason to keep her in! She is completely out of touch. Love the Porker of the month Award and You Tube on Marcy just released today.

BTW…A very good article which addresses both Reps and Dems and their “Ruling Class Mentality”. It’s in American Spectator:
    http://spectator.org/archives/2010/07/16/americas-ruling-class-and-the

Kind of explains how those (of both parties) who spend most of their time in the cocoon of DC have a perverted idea of how REAL LIFE is.

Again…await that 28 year long list of Marcy’s big accomplishments.

  57. LisaRenee:

All you have to do DB is Google “Marcy Kaptur Accomplishments” – it’s easy and fairly well known by most but just for you – a few of the more well known ones:

Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, who represents Northern Ohio’s Ninth Congressional District, is currently serving her twelfth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. She is the senior-most Democratic woman in Congress and is one of only 82 women out of 535 members of the 109th Congress.

Congresswoman Kaptur fought vigorously to win a seat on the House Appropriations Committee. Since elected, she has risen in seniority and is now the senior Democratic woman on Appropriations. She has secured subcommittees on Agriculture, the leading industry in her state, and Defense. Kaptur is the first Democratic women to serve on the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. In her legislative career, she has also served on the Budget; Banking, Finance and Urban Affairs; Veterans Affairs Committees, and on Veterans Affairs-Housing and Urban Development and Independent Agencies (Environmental Protection, Veterans, and NASA and the National Science Foundation), Foreign Operations, and Military Construction Appropriations Subcommittees, which have allowed her to pursue her strong interests in economic growth and new technology, community rebuilding, and veterans.

Congresswoman Kaptur has focused strong efforts on rebuilding the economic might of her district such as improvements in bridge, road, rail and port facilities, including the New Maumee River Crossing – the largest bridge project in Ohio’s history; expansion of Toledo’s Farmers’ Market; development of the Maumee River Heritage Corridor between Ohio and Indiana, which includes passage of legislation and funds to acquire Fallen Timbers as a national affiliate of the U.S. Park Service; clean-up of the waterways adjacent to Lake Erie; development of initiatives to enhance the earnings potential of Northwest Ohio crops; shipping of federal cargos on the Great Lakes; acquisition of wildlife refuges and shoreline recreation; and expansion of university-related research.

Kaptur directed federal support to acquire Quarry Pond as the centerpiece for a new conservation and lands legacy endowment for northwest Ohio. Lucas County-based 180th Tactical Fighter Squadron underwent a F-16 modernization attributable to her efforts. Current and former Defense Department and other private-sector workers who were exposed to and suffer from beryllium were the beneficiaries of a major piece of legislation Kaptur guided to passage. She was awarded the Veterans of Foreign Wars Americanism Award, in part for introducing the legislation authorizing the National World War II Memorial in Washington in 1987, as well as for her longstanding commitment to America’s veterans. She also received the Prisoner of War “Barbed Wire” Award for her commitment to veterans’ affairs.

The National World War II Memorial was dedicated on May 29, 2004 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., capping a 17-year legislative effort. Hundreds and thousands of veterans and their families have visited the memorial, the idea that came from the grassroots of Ohio. In 1986, Roger Durbin, a rural letter carrier from Berkey, Ohio, asked Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur at a fish fry at a township hall why there was no memorial to World War II in Washington, D.C. Kaptur helped make Roger Durbin’s dream a reality by introducing legislation in Congress to create the memorial. There were stops and starts, but nothing could stop this powerful idea that sprang from the grassroots of America.

Dedicated to the principle that fiscal responsibility begins in “one’s own backyard,” Congresswoman Kaptur has consistently returned money to the federal Treasury. She refuses to accept Congressional pay raises and donates them to offset the federal deficit and charitable causes in her home community.

Demonstrating international leadership through diplomatic contributions to the Middle East Peace process, Congresswoman Kaptur is responsible for directing the first surplus farm commodities in 1999 to support the peace process in the Middle East in Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian Authority. As a result of the intifada, only the war torn region of Lebanon has progressed forward with over 200 villages undertaking community development. She also remains dedicated to democratic institution-building across the globe and has spearheaded private charitable efforts for peoples’ of underdeveloped nations, including Ukraine and Vietnam. As Co-Chair of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus, she has lead efforts to establish a Congressional-Rada exchange program. She is the key sponsor of regulatory changes that force accountability on Russian food aid relief, helping to insure one billion dollars of United States resources go to people in need, not into the black market or pockets of government bureaucrats. As leader on issues related to international trade and human and labor rights, Kaptur will continue to assess the impact of NAFTA and actively engage upcoming trade negotiations on the side of workers.

Granted — WW II memorial located in Washington DC. That is good. But I mean for the people of NW OH specifically…not copy and paste articles on what committees she was on. You have a lot of words Lisa, but I don’t see specifics for NW Ohio that she has advanced our living standard here in NW Ohio? as in bringing companies here. I mean ones that don’t need our money to be a faux biz.
Appreciate specifics. Thanks! I do know she is a member of the Liberal Democratic Progressive Caucus and I see you speak of a role she had in the Middle East. Are you aware of her role as part of the Hamas 12?

I think after 28 years we can all kind of see where we are now—worse off. Downtown Toledo over the past 28 years for example. I’m sorry but after 28 years to only sponsor 7 or 8 bills?! I don’t think you want to go down that union (jobs) road either. Just my opinion.

Just seems like Toledo is worse and even more of a joke. Check Kaptur out on the Bill Maher show on You Tube..wow! And her hate for Capitalism with Michael Moore!– NO WONDER NO COMPANIES ARE LOCATING HERE> Maybe someone should enlighten Kaptur as to the fact that Capitalism means jobs. Or maybe she’s just out to lunch at Tortilla Coast.

  63. MICHAEL L. FRIEDMAN:

LISA, THANK YOU FOR POSTS 52 AND 56….TO ADD ABOUT THE 180TH FIGHTER WING, SHE NOT ONLY GOT US THE F-16, AND A FEW NEW MISSIONS, BUT ALSO SAVED THE 180TH FW FROM THE BRAC NOW THAT IS A CONGRESS PERSON TO BE PROUD OF, MR IOTT SOLD HIS DADS COMPANY DOWN THE RIVER AND COST ALOT OF PEOPLE THEIR JOBS

AND YES, LETS NOT FORGET ABOUT ROGER DURBIN.

MR IOTT NEVER SERVED A DAY OF ACTIVE DUTY, AND I STILL TO THIS DAY, NEVER RECALLED HEARING ABOUT HIS MILITARY UNIT, AND THAT IS AFTER SPENDING 41 YEARS OF MILITARY SERVICE BOTH ACTIVE DUTY AND OHIO ANG, HOW DARE HE PUT ON A BOMBER JACKET AND FLASH IT ON TV, AND CALL HIMSELF A FULL BIRD COLONEL…..

  64. Patrick W:

I think that local policy is more to blame than Marcy for Toledo’s problems. Toledo’s living wage policy, strong union presence, and poor leadership are major deterrants for new companies considering locating in the area. Why is Bass Pro in Rossford? Probably because of the living wage policy that almost kept Costco out. No businessman wants to locate in a strong union town either. There is no sense in volunteering to be shaken down. Marcy has voted for runaway defecits, cap and trade, and health care. All of these things are bad for Toledo and bad for America. She deserves to lose, but I don’t know if Iott is the right man for the job. He will certainly have more cash than any of her previous opponents. My guess is Marcy 60%, Iott 40%. It would be nice if a Toledo news outlet would do some polling

Well, after 41 years in the Air Guard, you’d think that Mr. Friedman would be able to tell a “bomber jacket” from an A-2 Flight Jacket which is commonly worn by military AND civilian pilots. You would also think he’d know that the wings and logo are those of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA, not the military. And as for Mr. Iott’s state military commission, that is a matter of public record. BTW, did you know that he is also a graduate of the USAF Air War College? Or maybe you think that is a sham outfit, too?

  66. MICHAEL L. FRIEDMAN:

DB FOREVER….COME ON NOW….I MUST HAVE HIT A NERVE, LETS NOT SPLIT HAIRS, OK I SHOULD HAVE SAID FLIGHT JACKET, I STAND CORRECTED. I AM SURE THAT IF HE WAS REQUIRED TO GO TO THE MID EAST, HE WOULD SELL OUT HIS COUNTRY JUST LIKE HE SOLD OUT THE WORKING PEOPLE OF SEAWAY FOODTOWN….DB, WHAT I MEAN IS HE WOULD GIVE UP SOME OF HIS BIG BUCKS NOT TO GO

  67. DBforever:

Nerve? How about accuracy…you Liberal Socialists remember that word? or HONOR? INTEGRITY?

  68. LisaRenee:

It wasn’t an e-mail it was a blog comment if we are going to focus on accuracy and…

Let’s not go off topic into an exchange between the two of you. The whole debate as to Iott’s military ranking was covered in great length – here during the primary for those of you interested in reading the opinions expressed then.

  69. MICHAEL L. FRIEDMAN:

LISA, TRUST ME IM DONE,LETS STAY ON TOPIC, AND MAY I ASK MR DB, HOW MUCH ACTIVE DUTY HE HAS.. I HAVE 4 YEARS, PLUS 37 ANG, THATS A WEEKEND A MONTH AND 37 ANNUAL TRAININGS OF TWO WEEKS AWAY FROM MY GROWING FAMILY, AND I WOULD DO IT AGAIN….LISA….IM DONE WITH THIS TOPIC
