A recent MSNBC poll with over 3 million votes cast show that nearly 96% of the responses were in support of Arizona’s position.

I have a hard time accepting this as a valid poll number. Where you are supposed to vote is not even on the MSNBC web site. It is also being solicited by spam email which makes me even more suspicious.

If 6 out of 10 people support the AZ law then 40% should be against it or have no opinion. That is the math I was taught.

Jeff: You might find it interesting that for over a year ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) has performed audits of the employment records of more than 2,900 business. Their findings have resulted in more than $3 million in fines an new record for the time period.

Now about the work that Americans don't want to do:

"Employers say the Obama administration is leaving them short of labor for some low-wage work, conducting silent raids but offering no new legal immigrant laborers in occupations, like farm work, that Americans continue to shun despite the recession. Federal labor officials estimate that more than 60 percent of farm workers in the United States are illegal immigrants."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38176981/ns/us_news-the_new_york_times

I recommend the article as it had some very good points and clearly show that like Lisa said: this is not a clear cut issue.

Now if you think you can do the work you can join Stephen Colbert at the United Farm Workers "Take Our Jobs" challenge: http://www.takeourjobs.org/

I'm a liberal. Not a registered democrat but I have never voted republican. I've never hired a undocumented worker to watch my kids, mow my grass, do handy work around my house either. Frankly, I can't think of one person I know who has hired illegals.

And if I hear "they do work American's don't want to do" one more time I'm going to barf. If Americans who are not working stop getting paid, I'm sure they will start doing those jobs too.

Sorry I'm not buying conservatives rigged the poll. There are too many various reports all showing the same outcome. The majority of Americans want immigration laws enforced.

Kudos to the fine state of Arizona and anyone who supports their stance.

The time and priority factor is a valid point Patrick though I'm wondering where the outrage was on that factor when Council spent double the time on another resolution to urge action by the Ohio General Assembly related to phone bills that created an additional hearing to try to basically "unresolve" the resolution that had no meaning, no power and had no impact on the General Assembly's votes.

If most of you took the time to watch any of our legislative bodies, including Council, you'd probably have a different perception of the time lost factor on this issue. This is not the first time they've spent this much time on a resolution, it has however gotten more attention. Take the General Assembly as an example, they are on vacation now since June and won't be back until after the November election...Ohio's facing some serious issues right now.

This might be the dumbest thing ever. Why councilmen in Toledo concern themselves with what happens in AZ is beyond me. Arizona has unique problems and they have the right to address the problems, seeing as no one in Washington wants to touch this problem. How about Toledo city council worry about Toledo? Toledo has plenty of its own problems.

Susan actually has a point, political groups send out e-mails to their supporters telling them about polls like the one you linked and skew the voting beyond the normal viewership. They do the same thing when it comes to polls on candidates, it's why the polls are even more useless than the "scientific" polls.

Which has nothing to do with the topic, beyond of course Jeff, it evidencing why it's done. So people will see the numbers and believe there is a larger number in support of that particular group's position. So, that people can try to demean/diminish those who oppose a certain candidate or a point of view as not being in the majority. There clearly are people who support what Arizona is doing, but for the most part they are not Democrats or Hispanics.

>>Television polls are meaningless, you can have one person vote a million times.

You're right. I'm sure hundreds of thousands of people voted multiple times. Makes perfect sense. I'm sure that's Martinez things too.

Arizona's unemployment rate is lower than Ohio's. I'm guessing few of you read the links shared considering some of the comments related to gangs and safety.

I'm curious if any of you actually have family who lives in AZ. I do...Some of the same people in AZ who are promoting this law have no problem hiring illegal immigrants to tend their yards and clean their pools, etc.

The courts will answer the question of can Arizona do this, I completely understand there is a portion of our society that supports the Arizona law or at least what little they know about it. However, there are also people out there who don't support Arizona's law and most importantly no matter the outcome of the tie breaker, if this resolution passes it has no legislative power. It puts members of council and now the Mayor on record on one issue facing society and urges action on immigration, just like our three Commissioners did with little attention.

Martinez and all of those who voted yes or no do work for all of Toledo, it could just as easily be argued that those voting no did not represent portions of Toledo either. If that's going to be the argument, which is not very realistic since resolutions like this are never going to present both positions. There's nothing stopping those on Council who support Arizona's law from presenting their own resolution if they feel strongly about it or if their constituents feel strongly about it.

As I wrote, I'd personally be just as happy to see an end to resolutions like this by all of our legislative branches rather than just target one.

I host a local International student family. They are here legally, going to school. So I like diversity and opportunity.
But Arizona is overwhelmed by illegal crossings. The unemployment rate of Americans is high. Gangs are taking advantage of the pourous border. Mexico and most countries deport illegals that come into their countries. . Spain allows 8 days to prove your legality to be in their country. Why aren't Baldemar Velasquez and Toledo council protesting them?
The Arizona law is a weak law that parallels federal law. They have a right to control their border.
