Bell says Northwest Ohio can be counted on to help those impacted by June tornadoes – Updated

This in via e-mail from the office of Mayor Mike Bell:

Bell Joins Supporters to Encourage Help for Disaster Victims

Mayor Michael P. Bell will join the Lake Township Relief Fund committee at a press conference at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 8 at Metcalf Field to encourage help for victims of the June tornadoes. The committee has been working to coordinate Benefit at Metcalf Field – a day of family friendly entertainment to raise funds to support the local recovery effort.

While many local businesses and donors have stepped up to donate goods, services and seed money for the event, organizers say there are still needs for goods and services to ensure that the festivities are top-notch.

Admission on Sunday will be $5 and all proceeds will be directed to disaster victims through WSOS – a community non-profit organization serving Wood, Seneca, Ottawa and Sandusky counties.

“We’ve seen that Northwest Ohio can be very generous in the aftermath of disasters like Hurricane Katrina and the tsunami in Thailand. This disaster is in our own backyard and I know Northwest Ohio can be counted on to help support our neighbors,” said Mayor Bell. “This has a renewed urgency now that FEMA has denied the request for assistance to the region.”

Benefit at Metcalf Field for the families in Wood and Ottawa County will take place on Sunday, July 11, 2010 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Metcalf Field. Admission is $5.

Bell Joins Supporters to Encourage Help for Disaster Victims

Mayor Michael P. Bell today joined the Lake Township Relief Fund committee to encourage help for victims of the June tornados. The committee has been working to coordinate Benefit at Metcalf Field – a day of family friendly entertainment to raise funds to support the local recovery effort.

“We’ve seen that Northwest Ohio can be very generous in the aftermath of disasters like Hurricane Katrina, earthquakes in Haiti and the tsunami in Thailand.

The event will feature 13 bands on two separate stages along with children’s activities, games, raffles and prizes. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Admission will be $5 and all proceeds will be directed to disaster victims through WSOS – a community non-profit organization serving Wood, Seneca, Ottawa and Sandusky counties.

While many local businesses and donors have stepped up to donate goods, services and seed money for the event, organizers say there is still a need to ensure that festivities are top-notch. The committee continues to accept donations of food, soda, directional signage, raffle prizes and loaned golf carts. There are also volunteer opportunities still available.

“We have a tremendous team of people who have come together and worked around the clock for the last five weeks to make this happen,” said Teri Michalak, Lake Twp. Relief Fund chairman. “We appreciate all of the time, energy and resources that our local community have donated to help make this a success.”

For more information about the Benefit at Metcalf Field, or to help coordinate volunteers or donations for the event, please contact Teri Michalak at 419.666.2887.

This is rather encouraging, and I am rather skeptical when it comes to government officials jumping on a bandwagon. Instead of complaining that the denial of federal funds is “just not right,” Mayor Bell is getting out there and promoting a solution.

Governor Strickland, sending a letter of appeal, might not work. Take notes from Mayor Bell.
