Waniewski’s District 5 Newsletter…

07 Jun 2010

This received last night via e-mail it is the newsletter from District 5 Toledo City Councilman Tom Waniewski:

Douglas Road Sewer Project Begins
Work begins this month on replacing or lining the sanitary sewer in Douglas Road between Oak Grove and Laskey. Douglas will be restricted to one-way traffic southbound. Northbound traffic will be detoured. Access to individual driveways will be maintained except for short times when the contractor is working directly in front of the driveways. Initial work will last about 30 days.

Elmhurst Repaving Delayed
Many families have expressed gratitude and relief after a previous newsletter noted that Elmhurst will be paved north of Sylvania Ave. I received word on May 14th, however, that the project is being delayed until next Spring. It’s being delayed so it can be coordinated with a scheduled waterline replacement in the area.

Special Use Permit Laws
I recently submitted to the Toledo-Lucas County Plan Commission, with the help of commission staff, several suggestions for clarifying procedural standards for a Special Use Permit (SUP). This was prompted by concerns conveyed to me by several residents. A meeting of the Zoning and Planning Committee will be held Wednesday, June 16th at 4 p.m. in Council Chambers at One government Center (Jackson and Erie Sts.) to discuss this. Public comment is welcomed.

Congratulations Firefighters
I was proud to be in attendance at the graduation of 38 men and women who became part of the Toledo Firefighters 2010 graduating class. Councilman George Sarantou and I were asked to say a few words at the graduation. I count that as one of the highlights of my 30 months on council.

Congratulations to the entire class, and especially to Holly Volmar who was presented the Cpt. John Brancheau Memorial Recruit Achievement Award for her spirit and dedication to the force.

Trash Tax Update
First…I am sorry that the trash tax passed. As you may know, I DID NOT vote for the trash fee, ever! Residents are starting to see their high bills since the trash tax has been added to your water bills. To clarify; You are charged $15 for April and May. Begining June 1st, if you recycle, that charge will be $8.50 per month. Bills are prorated based on the date range in which they are issued.
I recently held a free refuse drop off day. Two dumpsters were put in District 5 so residents can dispose of their excess garbage at no cost. Our city crews get about 500 calls a day for extra pick up, and that is putting a strain on our crews. The event was a HUGE success. I’ll likely repeat this program right around Fall cleanup time.

Forward this Newsletter
I am frequently asked by Toledoans I meet about things relating to the city. When I ask if they get my newsletter, they say they are not in my district. Please forward this email to just one of your friends who may live within the city but outside west Toledo. It will give them the opportunity to subscribe, if they’d like (and at no cost) so they can be informed about city issues.

Ticket Endorsement!?
After leaving Christ the King church recently, I ran into a friend who introduced me to his wife who told me about a speeding ticket she received while driving down Woodley. She said the police officer handed her the $143 ticket and said she can thank me because of my persistent communication with police about controlling high-speed traffic in our neighborhoods. I’ll take that as a good thing. I also want to thank the Toledo Police for their continued hard work.

Blessed Sacrament Festival
Blessed Sacrament is having its parish festival June 10th through June 13th. The festival takes place on the Blessed Sacrament campus at Close Park.

Old Orchard Garage Sales
The Old Orchard Mom’s Group is having a neighborhood garage sale June 26th.

Fitness 19 Fiasco
I want to thank our building inspection department for their continued hard work in getting Fitness 19 to clean up their act in the DeVeaux Village Shopping Center. The city has been patiently working with Fitness 19, and I believe we’ve given them plenty of time to clean things up. The next step is a court hearing.

Point Place Stage Coach Rides
Councilwoman Lindsay Webb does a great job representing Point Place, but I thought I would include this in my newsletter. PP Business Association, and others, are starting Stage Coach Dinner Tours at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. The first run is June 10th at Webbers Restaurant. What a great idea!! Call 419-726-9571 for more information, cowboy.
