Let’s flash back to the trash fee promise made before Issue 5 passed…
A statement in support of Issue 5 sent out by Toledo City Councilman George Sarantou and posted here, (link) on April 22, makes it pretty clear what was promised and when:
At the March 30th, 2010 City Council meeting, I asked Mayor Bell to commit to lowering the new trash fee of $15.00 and I urged him to have a lower rate for those citizens who recycle. I am pleased that Mayor Bell has now committed that if Issue 5 passes; the $15.00 monthly trash fee will be revised to:
$5.00 Seniors with Homestead Exemption
$8.50 Residents who Recycle
$15.00 Residents who do not Recycle
If that promise is going to be tossed out the window, then any of the other plans suggested as alternatives should be considered.
However, if promises made to voters matter? What should happen, no matter the position on that promise, it should be kept…
Hey Lisa:
May 21st, 2010 at 2:52 pmWe covered this story on Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday we talked to the mayor and asked if he thought he was breaking a promise–and whether there was a promise to break. Thursday, we outlined three council proposals that re-instate a recycling incentive. Wednesday’s story is still online at 13 abc.com.

Thanks Bill, readers of this post should head over and read your link, it could add to the discussion.

May 21st, 2010 at 3:01 pmBroken promises by politicians seem to be the norm these days.
When they were selling this new garbage system I do not remember any mention of additional fees, cans to be paid for, etc. It was sold as a system that paid for itself rather quickly. After it passed council all of a sudden fees were in the discussion.
I see recycle cans all over the city not emptied. I believe some people are using them for additional garbage. And they are the perfect addition to anyone’s front yard. If you do not reward those who recycle I cannot believe that the majority of residents will take the time to do so.
I’m very leery of any communication the administration puts out any more. They change their minds, don’t bother to tell anyone, etc. I also would like the members of council to do their jobs representing the citizens of this city, not special interest groups.
May 21st, 2010 at 3:28 pmUnfortunately, that’s what you get with government. They tell you one thing, then do something else. Then, when they fail, they say that if they had more tax payer money they could fix the problem. Of course people will not recycle without some sort of financial incentive, as it is not worth the time and effort to do it.

May 22nd, 2010 at 8:45 amAs I posted on another thread on this topic.
Ludeman pointed out that recycling isn’t done at One Government Center. Are we surprised?
The elected leaders are speaking with forked tongues.
May 22nd, 2010 at 9:41 amNot recycling in One G Center? That is a lot of Government hypocracy….too much I say…
Perception is also important…
Reality is seldom positive….
May 22nd, 2010 at 11:27 amIt’d be easy for the 21st floor to recycle if they wanted to, they could take personal responsibility for it, or continue to wait for someone else to do it.
May 22nd, 2010 at 11:30 amLisa….how true….if they wanted to….
Nothing in life is easy…..Recycling takes time, energy (sweat equity) and persistence…oh…and patience…if they would only empty their aluminum cans…please..please..please…if possible rinse them too….
If someone agrees to “do the work”…lend a hand…get others to do the same…the more the merrier…..something about strength in numbers.
One G Center….wake up!!!
May 22nd, 2010 at 12:49 pmLike for all politicians, we the people are useful idiots for those who need our votes. Bell is one of those politicians who needed votes to get elected mayor and there were plenty of useful idiots who voted for him.
May 22nd, 2010 at 9:10 pmPromises, contracts, any wonder Bell campaigns clean shaven, comes back after the election with a beard? Forshadowing, eh?
May 23rd, 2010 at 8:45 amPeople are always going to fall for promises made by government type people.
They pulled the same thing when they were pushing for the 3/4 tax to go through. Saying they were going to lay off police and all that if it wasn’t passed. A bunch of hysterical people couldn’t vote for it fast enough. It seems like not even a month passed and they were laying off police.
They need to recycle at One Government Center.
