Open Thread Thursday March 24
It’s that time again, where you can start the topic of conversation with fellow participants on the Jungle to see if they share your interest.
We have not really spent much time discussing quite a few topics, including efforts to de-fund public broadcasting. The Republican-led U.S. House voted 228-192 to totally de-fund NPR. NPR receives little in federal funding itself; most federal funds go to local stations. Legislation also exists to de-fund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, President Obama budgeted $445 million for CPB in 2012.

As always, it’s your choice what to discuss as long as it is related to politics and the usual rules concerning civility are followed.

I am annoyed that Francine Lawrence has taken it upon herself to write a letter to withdraw TPS from Race to the Top money.
The way I understand it, from what I have read, she’s upset because a program that she and her husband has developed (and I’m guessing gets money for) is being cut. That is her reasoning for writing the letter.
She claims that Dr. Pecko doesn’t want to work with her. But, with her actions, it seems as though she really isn’t interested in working with him.
As a parent of a child who goes to TPS and as a citizen who lives in the TPX district, I am willing to support teachers, to a point. After all they are responsible for the education of our city’s children. But, I do not support self-serving action as this. Especially if it will harm the quality of my child’s education.
I’m also annoyed, because it seems like such a cowardly act on her part. After all, she is retiring after this school year and will not be around for the fall out of her actions.

Oh look! Look and see. See Ms. Lawrence get revenge.
Run Dr. Pecko, run run run.

I live in Toledo but not TPS district.
I agree it seems a resentful way of saying I’m mad you’re not using “our system”. The Toledo Public Schools have so many complex problems this just doesn’t seem to be the right thing to do.
I’m from a family of educators and I cannot believe any of them would do the same. They do work hard and have plenty of work to do at home. My family has a superintendent of schools, a college prof. principals and classroom teachers.
Let’s see if a compromise can be worked out.

I think it plain stinks that the House wants to de-fund PBS and NPR. They have highly regarded programming on from preschool to those that even us old adults like.
I thought freedom of speech included radio and TV. And most stations get some public funding. It is like the death squad is after Big Bird, Elmo and the Cookie Monster.

I read online that they will need a mediator now to take care of this thing between Fran Lawrence and Dr. Pecko. Really???? Come on people. Put your big girl and boy pants on, suck it up, and do your job. It’s for the children after all, isn’t it?
