It’s like when Hitler invaded Poland in 1939 & Terrorist babies
The political rhetoric is heating up, but when I saw this Newsweek piece LINK where Stephen Schwarzman, the chairman of the Blackstone Group, was quoted as telling a group of board members of a nonprofit organization:
“It’s a war,” Schwarzman said of the struggle with the administration over increasing taxes on private-equity firms. “It’s like when Hitler invaded Poland in 1939.”
I paused…Apparently Schwarzman really believes this and it’s fairly clear others out there, even some who comment here, would agree with his statements. I’m torn between the type of response I read on A Spork in the Drawer:
Well, except for razing an entire nation and attempting to exterminate its inhabitants, why yes, raising taxes on private-equity firms is just like when Hitler invaded Poland!
Or seriously focusing on the history of what took place in 1939, to demonstrate how wrong that type of a comparison is…
There’s a huge divide in our country right now as far as perception. Another recent example is Rep. Louis Gohmert’s speech about “terror babies” and what was described by Mediaite as a trainwreck of an interview when he was on CNN with Anderson Cooper. Gohmert clearly believes there are women coming into this country to have babies that will become terrorists 15 to 20 years from now.
For context, the statement made by Gohmert on the House of the Floor – LINK:
“It appeared they would have young women who became pregnant [and] would get them into the United States to have a baby. They wouldn’t even have to pay anything for the baby,” Gohmert said. “And then they would return back where they could be raised and coddled as future terrorists. And then one day, 20, 30 years down the road, they can be sent in to help destroy our way of life.”
A Washington Post article that talked about Chinese parents who were willing to pay thousands to have their baby born in the US appears to be part of the “proof” Gohmert cites, LINK though he also claims he got this information from an unnamed retired FBI agent.
I don’t normally watch Rachel Maddow, but “Terrorist uterus weilding ladies” was just one of the ways she used to describe what is being said and the fear factor, caught my attention, LINK when I was searching for information on this story.
Which binds the two topics, both examples create the specter of fear. Schwarzman wants us to fear the current administration, Gohmert wants us to fear pregnant women who are not citizens who give birth here…
I am afraid, but my fear is how far will this continue…

RACHEL AND KEITH ARE THE BEST ON TV…I SAW THAT SEGMENT ON MSNBC, AMERICAS BEST NETWORK
by MICHAEL L. FRIEDMAN on Aug 15, 2010 at 8:04 pm
America’s best network? LMAO
Check out the ratings to see what the rest of America thinks.

There are larger issues than the ratings aspect.
by LisaRenee on Aug 15, 2010 at 11:06 pm
American Idol and WWE Wrestling beat FOX News, MSNBC and CNN combined. Obviously ratings have nothing to do with the quality of content.

“terroist babies”?
Is this what, I beleive it was Kruchev(sp) meant when he said “We will get you from the inside” ?
Maybe it wasn’t him, but this topic gives you a new insight.
The radical right and left need to temper the rhetoric just a little bit.

This rhetoric needs to be tempered more than just a little bit. To me it is just plain “crazy talk”. And there are people who believe this as gospel.
As someone who lived through WWII, who was in 5th grade when the war ended. I do not remember any such talk in my home during this time or on the radio. The media and government glorified the war as a “just war” but the big push was to sell war bonds.
I too am worried, LisaRenee, about how far these lies will go and what the consequences will be for our country.

We have such short memories. Remember when MoveOn.org was running an ad contest where anyone could upload homemade Anti-Bush ads and two ads out of hundreds compared Bush to Hitler.
It was the end of the world. The right wing freaked out and all of the media jumped on it. All Democrats everywhere “had to denounce it” on the record.

“This is the worst and most vile form of political hate speech,” said Gillespie. “These candidates have a chance to repudiate this pollution of our political process by repudiating these ads at this afternoon’s debate in Iowa.”
The ads were removed fairly quickly, but the freak out was done.
Of course, Glenn Beck takes the cake when comparing people to Hitler and Nazis. This is sums of the right wing in a nut shell…

The rhetoric is getting down right fearful, I agree Lisa. And just when I’ve lost all hope Rachael Maddow states her views of this crap in a way that makes me laugh out loud. She’s a pretty smart gal who has a unique ability to make fools of these nut cases and their ridiculous statements to invoke fear.

There’s a pretty easy way to avoid all of this rhetoric. I keep my radio on WIOT. (Though “Sympathy for the Devil” is on right now, and it has references to The Blitzkreig). I tend to steer away from national news, and keep my interests local. I don’t feel that attitude is one of an ostrich with its head in the sand, as much as that I know locally, there are ways I can make a difference.
